911 call center staying put for now - October 18, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

FORT WAYNE Although several new site proposals for relocating the combined city and county 911 call center are in the works, board members decided Tuesday the most logical thing to do is to stay in the same county-owned building.

Amy Biggs, Fort Wayne fire chief and president of the Consolidated Communications Partnership, which oversees the call center, initiated the discussion of moving the call center from the basement to the sixth floor of the Rousseau Centre, formerly the City-County Building.

Staying in the same building makes the most sense, she said.

Logistics and fiscal and operational responsibility these are the components we need to consider when we look at the function of 911, Biggs said.

City and county police and fire services are all located in the building, and the 911 call center is an integral part of the public safety network and should be housed under the same roof, Biggs said.

Rusty York, Fort Wayne police chief and a member of the board, said staying at the Rousseau building, but moving from the cramped basement where the center is now located to the sixth floor, would save a substantial amount of money.

The floor now houses Victim Assistance and an office for Tony Burrus, director of the Allen County Solid Waste District, but both offices could easily be moved to another floor, York said.

The rooms on the sixth floor are high enough that construction crews will not have to get into the ceilings, so the expensive and problematic asbestos removal that county officials have run into while remodeling the building will not be an issue, York said.

In 2011, the county considered using the eighth floor for the call center, but decided it would be too costly to renovate.

The renovation of the building was completed earlier this year at a cost of $4.8 million, slightly more than the estimated $4.5 million county officials were expecting.

Couple charged with scamming Lebanon widow out of $34K - October 6, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Christopher P. Corradi (SUBMITTED)

Criminal complaints were filed before District Judge Thomas Capello charging Christopher P. Corradi, 33, and Lisa F. Squires, 28, with three violations of home improvement fraud, deceptive or fraudulent business practices, theft by deception and two counts of conspiracy.

Corradi and Squires, both of whose last known address was 1770 Wheatfield Court, Middletown, did business as $Price Is Right$ Paving and Sealing, the district attorney said.

Arnold said anyone with information about their whereabouts should call their local police or the Lebanon

    Lisa F. Squires (SUBMITTED)

In April, Corradi went to the victim's Beechwood Avenue home and offered to seal her driveway for $400, Arnold said. Corradi told the victim her home needed other repairs.

Corradi and Squires were paid more than $34,000 to do basement remodeling, mold eradication, weatherproofing, gutter cleaning and other jobs, the district attorney's office said. They told the woman the work was being completed in the basement, but she could not go downstairs to inspect it on her own because of her physical limitations.

Investigators said they found what they characterized as "little more than a haphazard coat of paint" had been applied to the basement paneling.

Pair Scam Elderly Woman, 84, out of $34,000 in Lebanon - October 6, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    LEBANON COUNTY--

The scam began in April of 2012 when Corradi and Squires operated a business under the name $Price Is Right$ Paving and Sealing, according to Lebanon County District Attorney David Arnold .

Court documents show the victim wrote a total of 14 checks between April 2012 and Aug. 2012 to Corradi and Squires totaling $34,800,00 dollars.

Both Corradi and Squires were paid to do basement remodeling, mold eradication, weatherproofing, gutter cleaning and other repairs, according to court documents.

Most of the work was being completed in the basement area and because of the victim's physical limitations, she was unable to see what was actually being worked on, Arnold said.

Investigators found no evidence of any work being done in the basement aside from a haphazard coat of paint had been partially applied to the basement paneling, according to court documents.

After becoming suspicious of the victim's spending practices, her bank began monitoring her account, investigators said.

Believing the expenses were legitimate, the victim told her bank she was having work done on her home as a result of last fall's flood. The bank notified the Lebanon County Area on Ageing after becoming concerned that the victim was being defrauded.

Police have issued a warrant for the arrest of both Corradi and Squires. The pair has ties to Middletown.

Anyone with information regarding their whereabouts is asked to contact police at 717-272-2054.

Whatâs Hot In Home Remodels - October 6, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Experts suggest that anyone planning a home remodeling project does plenty of homework. If that's the case, this weekend's Showcase of Remodeled Homes could be considered the study guide.

"We had all this wonderful space downstairs but it was quite outdated. We didn't use it very frequently and it was somewhat cold," Dani Pattison said.

The lower level of the Pattison family home isn't what it used to be and they consider that a very good thing.Last year, they decided to completely remodel it. Now, the basement features a modern fireplace on one end and a well designed wet bar on the other. And everything between was also updated.

The Pattison's chose to update their home and stay. Others do so to add value before selling.

"Everybody wants to put their own touch on their belongings and on their home and make it theirs. That's the great thing about remodeling, is when a homeowner does buy a new home, they can remodel and make it their own," Jason Seykora of Seykora Remodeling said.

Among remodeling projects in KELOLAND homes, kitchens are number one. Remodeling the bathroom is the second most popular. No matter what you remodel though, those who do the work say getting your homework done before hand is the most important step.

The Homebuilders Association is hosting its Showcase of Remodeled Homes this weekend. The event will let anyone researching remodeling trends see the transformation of eleven homes.

"We did do a lot of looking around and focusing on certain things. We found some things that we really liked and tried to pull colors and ideas from there," Pattison said.

"That's the great thing about the Showcase of Remodeled Homes is you can come out, see a bunch of products and it may lean you one way or the other in the end," Seykora said.
