Clayton's Daniele nears reopening as a Hampton Inn - July 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CLAYTON A $15 million renovation that included the addition of a fifth floor has transformed the tired, 1960s Daniele Hotel into a contemporary Hampton Inn and Suites.

The hotel is scheduled to open next Friday as a Hampton Inn nearly two years after Equis Hospitality Management bought the empty Daniele for $2.5 million in late 2012. Mike Mullenix, chairman and chief executive of Equis, said Friday the remodeling required a total renovation.

The only things we saved were the exterior walls, he said.

Adding a fifth floor upped the hotels room count from 82 to 106, including 25 suites. Nightly rates will range from about $149 to $209.

Opened in 1964 at 216 North Meramec Avenue, the hotel as the Daniele was at times a celebrity hangout, said Mullenix, adding that Cher, Rod Stewart and the Rolling Stones stayed there.

The Daniele closed in 2007 as part of a renovation plan by its then owner, Conrad Properties. That plan fizzled as the hotel business nosedived along with the rest of the economy during the Great Recession.

As a Hampton Inn, the hotel is joint venture between Brentwood-based Equis and Rockbridge Capital, of Columbus, Ohio. HBD Construction handled the renovation, which included the rebuilding of deteriorated parts of the buildings basement parking garage.

New features include an enclosed saltwater pool, a fitness center, a meeting room able to accommodate about 40 people and a bar facing Meramec.

Mullenix and Mohammed Kashif, the Hampton Inns general manager, said weekday business will come from corporate customers. Such business will skew toward leisure travel by people visiting friends and relatives in the Clayton area.

Mullenix said he knew when Equis bought the Daniele that it was a good location for a hotel but that his company needed time to determine its best use.

VAMC estimates line break will cost $2 million - July 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

July 26, 2014 VAMC estimates line break will cost $2 million

By Wendy Holdren Register-Herald Reporter The Register-Herald Sat Jul 26, 2014, 12:01 AM EDT

    BECKLEY

Officials at the Beckley Veterans Administration Medical Center said damages caused by a main water line break on the first floor last month will cost an estimated $2 million in repairs.

The water main broke about 6:20 p.m. June 30, flooding the first floor as well as the elevator shaft into the basement.

Debbie Voloski, public affairs officer at the Beckley VA, said clinics on that floor were canceled the day after the flooding, but those clinics have since been relocated to other areas of the hospital.

There was extensive damage to the floor and the walls on the first floor, as well as the furnishings and the IT equipment, Voloski said. We are still in the initial phases of recovery.

She said a company has been hired to bring the facility back to its previous state, and the estimated completion for the remodeling and repairs is eight to 12 weeks.

Grove City company charged with consumer law violations - July 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By MARK DUBOVEC Wednesday July 23, 2014 10:29 AM

The Ohio Attorney General's Office has filed a lawsuit against a Grove City business and its owner, charging consumer law violations.

Attorney General Mike DeWine's office announced July 9 that a suit had been filed against Quality 1st Home Improvements LLC and its owner, Tony Logan, for violations of Ohio's consumer laws.

A news release from the attorney general's office identifies specific counts of failure to deliver, performing shoddy work and failing to give consumers notice of their three-day right to cancel under the state's Consumer Sales Practices Act and Home Solicitation Sales Act.

The case was filed with the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas and has been assigned to Judge Charles Schneider. The defendant has 28 days from when it was served to respond.

"It's still in the process phase," said Dan Tierney, spokesman for DeWine's office. "It's essentially in the pretrial phase."

The lawsuit seeks, according to the news release, restitution for consumers, civil penalties and an injunction to stop further violations.

"That's generally the goal of any consumer litigation," Tierney said.

According to a brief filed by DeWine's office, Logan faces a civil penalty of $25,000 for each separate violation, if he is convicted.

Quality 1st Home Improvements, a home-based business that operates out of 5046 Demorest Drive, offers home improvement services, specifically basement remodeling.

High matrix metalloproteinase-9 expression induces microangiogenesis after cerebral infarction - July 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Basement membrane degradation and blood-brain barrier damage appear after cerebral infarction, severely impacting neuronal and brain functioning. Matrix metalloproteinase-9 is able to degrade the major components of the basement membrane around cerebral blood vessels and to mediate extracellular matrix remodeling. Therefore, Dr. Huilian Hou and colleagues from the First Affiliated Hospital of Medical School of Xi'an Jiaotong University, China induced cerebral infarction in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats by intragastric administration of high-sodium water (1.3% NaCl) for 7 consecutive weeks. Researchers found that matrix metalloproteinase-9 expression, the number of blood vessels with discontinuous collagen IV expression and microvessel density were significantly higher, and the number of continuous collagen IV-positive blood vessels was lower in the infarct border zones of stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats given high-sodium water. Linear correlation analysis showed matrix metalloproteinase-9 expression was positively correlated with the number of discontinuously collagen IV-labeled blood vessels and microvessel density in cerebral infarcts of stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats. These results published in the Neural Regeneration Research (Vol. 9, No. 11, 2014) suggest that matrix metalloproteinase-9 upregulation is associated with increased regional angiogenesis and degradation of collagen IV, the major component of the basal lamina, in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats with high-sodium water-induced focal cerebral infarction.
