COEUR d'ALENE - The Innovation Collective isn't quite finished remodeling its new co-work space in the basement of the Sherman Mall, but it already has 10 people using the space.

"It's still kind of coming together, but we have HVAC now. We have heat, water and new electrical work," said Nick Smoot, co-founder of the Innovation Collective. "It's a whole new world."

Smoot said he has 10 people working in the space now, and a list of 30 others who want to use the space. His goal is to finish the IC:Work space by Dec. 1.

"We even have one guy that does web design for the United Nations, who wants space," he said, adding the IC:Work space has one gigabyte of Internet for its tenants to use.

He is also working on a classroom setting in one corner of the space because he is getting a lot of inquiries from people who want to rent space for events.

As all of that comes together, Smoot said, the collective is also branching out a bit.

In fact, on Friday, Smoot met Idaho Department of Commerce Director Jeff Sayer to discuss technology efforts which are cropping up all over Idaho.

"Nick has been telling me about this place for a while now," Sayer said. "I've really been wanting to see this."

Sayer said hubs of technology are sprouting across the state, and he has been talking with Smoot about how to "pull it all together."

Smoot said he has also been talking with people in other parts of the country about how to expand the Innovation Collective in their communities.

As far as old buildings go, the near-abandoned building dubbed the old AT&T building located near Pasadena City Hall has seen better days. The 47-year-old structure has been sitting empty for more than three years after the basement flooded during hurricane Ike. But renovation plans are moving forward to bring the building back to life.

On Tuesday (Nov. 4) the Pasadena City Council again took up the issue of repairing the building and using it to house the Fire Department, Code Enforcement, Municipal Court and Fire Marshal Departments.

What were looking at is total costs for remodeling the AT&T building of about $11 million. This does not include repairs to the parking garage behind the building, Councilmember Pat Van Houte said.

The City of Pasadena also owns another dilapidated building located at 901 Curtis, which was also damaged during Hurricane Ike. Engineers estimate a cost of roughly $11 million to tear down 901 Curtis and build a new building. Van Houte questioned why the same money was being spent to tear down and rebuild one building but not the other.

One way gets you a remodeled building and one way gets you a new building, she said.

The old AT&T building was donated to the city by Southwestern Bell in 2011 in exchange for real estate fees and closing costs of roughly $25,000.

During remodeling, a portion of the $11 million renovation budget will be spent to remove mold and remediate asbestos issues.

The building has a torn roof. The windows are broken. The flooding happened and the basement took on 10 feet of water. It has mold. It has asbestos, Councilmember Don Harrison said. It is my understanding the city itself condemned the garage. All this happened because of one event: Hurricane Ike.

Van Houte asked why thecouncil wasnt allowed input on the decision.

This was presented to council as Weve made a decision, vote for this one. This has never been something for council to discuss, the pros and cons, she said. Theres a problem with the way were making decisions and I am not convinced this is the best choice.

More than five-hundred undergraduate and graduate students draped in festive attire filled the Calderwood Courtyard to mark the student opening of the Harvard Art Museums Thursday.

The lucky recipients of the tickets, which sold out within a few hours, were greeted by numerous members of the administration including Dean of the College Rakesh Khurana, amid exclamations of wonder at the sight of the renovated space.

The director of the Harvard Art Museums, Thomas W. Lentz, discussed the novelty of the new building. This is brand new museum, he said. We have taken everything apart about the old museum and put it back together again.

Designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano, the new features of the 240,000 square-foot building include an expansion of gallery space to 43,000 square feet, six levels of all-purpose public space, a glass roof, a 300-person lecture hall, rooms for teaching, exhibition, and research, and a cafe.

The Harvard Art Museums will open to the public on Nov. 16 after six years and $250 million worth of renovations. Throughout the six years, construction workers have worked more than one million labor hours and the muesums collections have been moved twice. The renovation combined the Fogg Museum, the Busch-Reisinger Museum, and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum into a single complex, with the staff of all three museums working together for the first time to fill the 50 galleries.

Students who had attended the University in 2008, when the Fogg first closed for remodeling, marvelled at its transformation. Having been an undergrad when the museum first shut its doors for renovation, I can attest to the incredible transformation of this museum and this courtyard, said Victoria D. Sung 10, a member of the student board of the Harvard Art Museums.

The museum will keep its property in Somerville, where the entire collection was stored prior to the reopening, as a storage space. The remodeled museums basement storage space does not have the capacity to store all 250,000 pieces in the museums collection.

Addressing attendees, Dean of the College, Rakesh Khurana said that the museum fulfilled the goals of the College. Welcome to this transformative museum, he said. We hope it will play a critical reflective role in the lives of our students. As Tom [Lentz] said, this is yours.

Students in attendance expressed their excitement regarding the space, as well as the prospect of access to a huge collection of art within such a close proximity.

My impression is that a lot of harvard students are here to come check it out and celebrate it, said Gabriel L. Guimaraes 17. The paintings are all amazing and I wasnt aware that Harvard had such an awesome collection.

Asbestos, a known carcinogen, was found in a piece of plaster in the basement of the Washington University Cooperatives Quadrangle Housing-owned building, although samples taken by Quadrangle show that asbestos levels fall below Environmental Protection Agency limits.

The Washington University Cooperative is a building in which students divide chores and cooking to foster a collaborative community. It is housed at 6021 Pershing Ave., which was built in 1910 when asbestos was commonly used as a flame-resistant building material. A maintenance team responding to a flooring issue discovered the asbestos.

Co-op residents were concerned that they would lose their possessions, which were stored in the basement despite rules forbidding the use of the basement as a storage space. The basement also serves as a kitchen and gathering location for residents.

Steve Condrin, director of Off-Campus Real Estate for Quadrangle, believes that residents should not look at the issue of asbestos itself but instead the way that Quadrangle is solving it.

The important thing here is for them to know is we have a maintenance team that is well-trained to spot issues, Condrin said, that when it sees a potential issue of concern to health and safety of our residents, they jump on it, and we are also concerned about the property residents keep in our building.

On Oct. 31, dust and air samples were taken throughout the basement and came back below the EPA-approved threshold for asbestos. Samples from the rest of the basement also showed that the asbestos had not spread. Condrin noted there were pieces of similar-looking plaster in the basement that did not contain asbestos.

Quadrangle has hired a licensed team to lead the process of containing the mineral, which is expected to be completed within several weeks. The contaminated area will be sealed off and a machine will lower the pressure in the area to prevent the chemicals used to treat the asbestos from spreading.

Thats something we will not cut any corners on, Condrin said. It will be handled within the applicable guidelines and regulations that are well-known among the vendors that we work with.

He added that he understands the concerns of residents.

I dont think its unreasonable for people to have natural fear and curiosity around asbestos, Condrin said. We share that fear, and we want to make sure that when theres asbestos in these older buildings that it doesnt pose a health risk.
