House destroyed by fire -
February 11, 2015 by
Mr HomeBuilder
A house being remodeled at 607 East Main Street was destroyed by fire last Thursday. A passerby noticed smoke coming from roof vents about 9 a.m. and called 911. The unoccupied home is owned by Tom Burk, and an extensive remodeling project was almost complete.
Working in single digit temperatures, firemen from Belmond and Goodell poured over a hundred thousand gallons of water on the blaze, but it was stubborn and would not go out easily. At one point the basement was filled with four to five feet of water.
An official said the fire was probably burning for a long time before smoke finally started to show. Firemen broke out basement windows when flames were seen there. Other firemen entered the front door but were called back because of the weakened condition of the floor. The flames burned through the main floor, the ceiling and the roof, and the aerial ladder truck (above) poured about 1,000 gallons per minute through the gaping hole in the roof. Other firemen broke out the brand new windows on the sides of the house and sprayed water through those openings. Firemen stayed on the scene until about 3 p.m.
An insurance investigator visited the house Monday but could not determine the cause of the blaze, an official said. Another fire expert was being called to examine the home. It is considered a total loss.

WASHINGTON TWP. Long Valley resident Joseph Fernandez knows how to treat his customers and hes gotten a special award for his efforts.
Fernandez, owner of JMF Construction, LLC, has won the 2015 Customer Service award from Houzz, a website dedicated to remodeling and interior design professionals.
Fernandez has been using his skills on his own Jacki Drive home since 2006. He made plans for the house before he even closed on the deal. Plans included blowing out walls to dramatically redraft the floor plan, as well as building all the cabinetry and most of the furniture.
Not a lot of contractors work on their own house, though I dont know why, Fernandez said. I know some guys who have, and obviously, I do. If youve got the talent, why not enjoy it yourself?
Fernandez, 55, followed a less traditional path to starting his own business in 1986. He worked in the stagecraft end of theater in high school and while attending Emerson College in Massachusetts, where he later designed sets for his alma mater. He worked on productions as far as Tulsa, Okla. to Lake George for opera troupes and Broadway productions including helping with sets for Little Shop of Horrors and productions by the Julliard School in New York City. Eventually, he began working on construction, and said he found his passion for woodworking in custom furniture and cabinetry, mainstays to his remodeling business.
Ive done the Little Shop of Horrors in Manhattan, worked for Julliard, and run a lot of that stuff on my own, Fernandez said. I went into construction and moved up from custom cabinetry to overseeing a five story brownstone renovation project in the city.
Fernandez said he continued in construction when his employer went out of business. An architect he knew referred Fernandez remodel a home for a fellow theater worker.
From then on, I was in business, Fernandez said. I bought some tools and worked out of my fathers basement at first, then moved on to my own shop in Hillsboro, and eventually moved on to just running shop out of my home.
In almost a decade at Long Valley, his home has been a work in progress, though it has always served well as a display of his work that he cant help but tweak.
I moved here because I do a lot of work in Chester and Mendham, but I also stretch all the way from Peapack to Summit, as far as Jersey City. Theres a lot to do with upscale clients in Morris County and Essex, Fernandez said.

HGTV is an old friend.
The network of home makeovers and remodeling shows debuted in 1994, and Ive been a faithful fan ever since.
Ive daydreamed about which show Id apply for and mentally drafted many a heart-tugging letter to the producers.
Ive drooled over the HGTV dream home, imagining life in the low country of South Carolina, the mountains of Utah or the beaches of Marthas Vineyard. (Do you think anybody random really wins, or is it some producers sister-in-law?)
Ive camped out in Home Depot, just waiting for the Bath Crashers or Kitchen Crashers team to find me pretending to look at sinks or cabinets.
Lately, though, our relationship has been troubled. My favorite escapist network has morphed into the Realtor Channel, as one blogger put it, or more accurately, Rich Home TV.
Originally, the network lineup included shows with affordable advice for real people with normal incomes Designed to Sell, the cheesy Room by Room and Decorating Cents.
That was before House Hunters and its spinoffs were on eight hours a day (we all know its staged, by the way). If I hear one more 20-something complain about the lack of granite or talk about entertaining Im going to hurl the remote at the big-screen. Pay your dues, property virgin.
In between theres a proliferation of shows about people with budgets of $800,000 not a penny more or $1.5 million for a vacation home on some island paradise.
Now I love Property Brothers and Love It or List It as much as the next homeowner. But honestly, where are all these people? A long way from This Old House, the grandfather of home-improvement shows.
