George Brown College Builds a Striking New Campus of Health and Wellness on Toronto Waterfront - November 8, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Prime Waterfront Location Inspires Stantec Architecture | Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects' Design of Health Sciences Facility

TORONTO, Nov. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ - Recently, one of the first major initiatives to revitalize Toronto's waterfront, the new George Brown College Waterfront Campus opened. Overlooking the harbour of Lake Ontario, the striking 507,000 sq. ft. building focuses on the shift to Inter-Professional Education (IPE) that will transition Canada's healthcare system towards a patient-centred, team-based care delivery model. It consolidates George Brown's schools of Health and Wellness, Dental Health, Nursing and Health Services Management in one purpose-built facility.

Designed by Stantec Architecture/Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects in joint venture, the campus creates a 'living lab' for IPE, which enables the training of students in health professions to collaborate across disciplines, allowing them to deliver holistic care and to support innovative service models and products that prioritize wellness and health promotion.

"Every design decision was filtered through an IPE lens considering health promotion as the next frontier of healthcare beyond prevention. The new building lives, breathes HEALTH - the site is absolutely integral, on the water and by the park. It's a water bottle free-zone and smoking is not allowed. The design has achieved our dream to have building that would be a true enabler of change at every level," said Lorie Shekter-Wolfson, Assistant Vice President, Waterfront Development and Dean, Community Services and Health Resources.

Formally, the architecture is inspired by the maritime and industrial heritage of the site, and draws inspiration from pier buildings, warehouses of industrial waterfronts and cargo ships. The siting and massing was determined by the location, and maximizes views to Lake Ontario and Sherbourne Park. Inside, a continuous path from the street level to the roof terrace creates a vertical 'learning landscape' which simultaneously encourages physical activity, reduces elevator use and provides places for students to cross paths and engage in learning outside of the classroom. Its 'collaboratory' quality is intrinsic to the IPE focus. The overall design optimizes access to fresh air, natural light, and public transit.

"The design reinforces an environment of wellness," said Michael Moxam and Bruce Kuwabara, project principals of the joint venture. "The overall program of spaces strikes a balance between academic instruction and hands-on experience that is increasingly essential to ensure the relevance of future healthcare professionals and to the long-term sustainability of Canada's universally accessible healthcare program."

Architects explain RVC classroom upgrades tonight - November 8, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Rockford School District isn't the only local government shaping plans for millions of dollars worth of building improvements in the next several years.

Rock Valley College is forging plans for what could be more than $60 million worth of facility upgrades in the coming years. First up is a $20.6 million renovation and expansion of Classroom Building I at the main campus, 3301 N. Mulford Road.

The RVC Facilities Committee discusses the details at 6 p.m. in Room 117-119 of the Woodward Technology Center.

Twelve 40-seat classrooms will be added to CLI, which was built in the 1960s and is today hampered by old electrical and mechanical systems. State capital funds, plus a 25 percent match from RVC, will pay for the $13.4 million renovation.

The college will pay an additional $5.8 million, primarily through bond funds, to expand the building. Additionally, RVC will tap property tax revenue from its protection, safety and health levy to complete $1.3 million worth of asbestos abatement.

Architects will give a presentation on the CLI overhaul. Additionally, the committee may discuss plans to renovate and expand Classroom Building II, which is where RVC intends to consolidate classrooms for art instruction. Trustees haven't yet to decided where and how to enhance rehearsal and performance space for music and theater disciplines.

Tonight's meeting is open to the public, but follow me on Twitter if you can't make it and I'll provide live updates. If you're more into Facebook, you can "like" my Register Star reporter page and stay on top of RVC news that way, too.

Architects look for new ways to manage disaster - November 8, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Architects from three countries will meet to discuss potential precautions against climate change and disasters, like Hurricanes Katrina or Sandy, through architecture and urban planning from 1 to 7:15 p.m.Today and 2 to 6 p.m.Fridayin the College of Architectures Theater Room.

Dynamic Equilibrium at the Waters Edge: Three Continents Symposiumwas initiated by UH Dean of Architecture Patricia Oliver and will include guest lecturers from the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina, Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands, and Tulane University.

Thomas Colbert, a UH associate professor of architecture, will be presenting his project called the Lone Star Coastal National Recreation Area, in a lecture called Water Strategies for the Upper Texas Gulf Coast.

Following what happened to New York, recently, and New Orleans, in 2005, we need to make sure it doesnt happen here, said Colbert, who moved to Houston from Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina. We need to fine tune our thinking to keep people safe in growing coastal communities.

David Waggonner, of Waggonner & Ball Architects in New Orleans will also be presenting a lecture titled Dutch Dialogues and a Water Strategy for New Orleans. Additional speakers will be Flavio Janches, professor at the University of Buenos Aires, will be presenting Whose City Is It?Jeffery A. Carney, associate professor and director of Louisiana State Universitys Coastal Sustainability Studio, will be lecturing Lift up. Dig In. Get out?Design Thinking for the Future Gulf Coast.

A serious debate needs to occuron how to solve these issues, said Colbert. People have superficial ideas that we want to put to the test and challenge. We are looking for practical and realistic solutions.

Some architecture students have already considered the fields responsibility to take environmental change into consideration when designing buildings.

From the environmental perspective, a designer must understand how the site now functions, its location, flora and fauna that might be on site, architecture senior Armando Hernandez said. For example, a building designed as an office building might function differently 25 years down the road, and the impact on the environment most likely will change.

Other students believe that environmental change iseveryones responsibility but that environmental consideration is crucial in architecture.

I do not believe architects are the only people responsible for these environmental endeavors, architecture junior Wintress Cloud said. But if architects dont consider the environment during construction, then who will?
