VP Binay encourage Filipino architects to help gov’t promote urban development - April 20, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

MANILA Vice President Jejomar Binay on Thursday encouraged Filipino architects to help the government in promoting urban development in the country.

Binay, also the chairman of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC), made the statement during the 3rd Annual Convention of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) in Pasay City yesterday (April 18).

In rising to [the challenge to scatter urbanization across a wider area], the cooperation between private sector developers, the LGUs, and urban planners proves to be the road to redemption. This multi-sectoral approach should continue to be an integral component of all our policy and planning efforts, Binay said.

Let us strengthen this cooperation by joining our heads and our skills with those from other local and international organizations that profoundly understand urban development and housing in the light of modern demands, the vice president added.

The vice president also urged UAP members to make eco-friendly designs by utilizing green technology and most of all to develop housing even more affordable and sustainable.

We share common and noble desires for the nation -- to improve the lives of our countrymen and give them firm ground on which they can build the future they seek, he added.(PNA)

Architects appointed for Norfolk Corn Hall project - April 20, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Diss Corn Hall

Dominic Bareham, senior reporter Thursday, April 18, 2013 8:09 PM

Architects have been appointed to develop plans to revamp a Norfolk towns Grade II listed arts venue as progress continues to be made towards a bid for Heritage Lottery funding.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Norwich-based Hudson Architects has been appointed to draw up a scheme for the restoration and development of the Corn Hall in Diss and for changes to the area of the town known as the Heritage Triangle between the hall and the Market Place, which could involve creating squares up Market Hill and into St Nicholas Street.

Landscape architects The Landscape Partnership, which was responsible for Norwichs new memorial gardens, will work alongside the Hudson team on the Heritage Triangle Project.

Sheila King, project manager for the Diss Heritage Partnership, said: The Corn Hall has achieved a lot in the last three years. Its already the leading venue around, and now we are firming up our plans for its restoration.

But just as important is the heritage work. We are investigating the evolution of the old town over the centuries the industries and people that helped create the landscape we see in Diss today.

This historical research will contribute to interpretation boards, exhibitions and so on, enabling visitors to enjoy the fascinating history of the old town. We have around another 1million to raise to fully fund the project, but we are confident we can do it.

Meanwhile were convinced that weve made an excellent choice with our design team. Not only do they have they the experience and creativity we need, theyre also local people with a great affection for Diss and enthusiasm for this transformational project.

Oxford Brookes University Abercrombie building architects shortlisted for RIBA’s Regional Awards 2013 - April 18, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Design Engine, who are the architects of the Abercrombie extension and the new John Henry Brookes building at Oxford Brookes University have been shortlisted for theRoyal Institute of British Architects Regional Awards 2013.

Winchester-based practiceDesign Enginewon the contract for the development of a new entrance building at Oxford Brookes against steep competition. The company proposed that rather than building a new building here and a new building thereto devise a radical master plan, get demolishing, and go back to first principles. The original campus at Oxford Brookes was designed in 1955 by city architect EG Chandler. The original plans defined generous courtyards, but additions over the years have obscured this clarity and reduced the open space available.

Design Engines vision returns to the 1950s plan and re-energises it with new buildings and a new circulation sequence. Their plan slides new buildings alongside the old, interlocking them together. By increasing the density of the built forms, it is possible to provide generous public spaces; either new spaces, as with the entrance piazza, or reconfigured spaces, as with the central courtyard.

Key to the design is the new John Henry Brookes Building which will serve as the new main entrance to the campus. The building will contain a modern library, a 300-seat floating lecture theatre and a learning space dubbed the Forum. The open space will include informal touch down areas for the laptop working and group discussion that now form a key part of modern universities facilities. It will also become the new home of Student Services and Oxford Brookes Students Union.

Richard Rose Casemore, a Partner at Design Engine, is also a design tutor in the School of Architecture at Oxford Brookes University.

Architects to present design ideas for Boulder library remodel Thursday night - April 18, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Architects have developed preliminary design ideas for a renovation of the Boulder Main Public Library, and they'll present them to the public at a meeting Thursday night.

This will be a "check-in" after a previous set of meetings in February for architects from Studiotrope Design Collective to learn about how people use the library and what improvements they would like to see.

Those ideas were incorporated into the plans for the renovation, which includes a redesign and remodel of the children's and teen areas and changes to the media area, the circulation desk and the adult literacy classrooms. The renovation will also enhance the library's fiction, music and movies collection area.

In addition, the library is considering adding a cafe.

Most of the money for the $2.45 million project comes from $49 million in bonds approved by Boulder voters in November 2011.

An additional $690,000 in infrastructure funding will be put toward replacing outdated electrical and data distribution systems, repairing or replacing windows, accessibility improvements, new carpeting and the possible cafe.

Thursday's meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Canyon Theater at the Main Public Library, 1001 Arapahoe Ave., with a short presentation. There will then be four break-out groups focused on different areas, including children's services, teen services, learning spaces and the cafe. Participants can rotate among the groups to give feedback on the areas that interest them.

Library spokeswoman Jennifer Bray said library officials hope people who attended the first meetings will come back to let architects know how well the preliminary designs reflect their wishes.

There will be two more public meetings before the new designs are finalized.

On May 6, there will be a meeting for parents of young children during the 10:15 a.m. storytime and a meeting for young teenagers at 4 p.m.

Team still evaluating architects for City Hall - April 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Eugene architect Otto Poticha didnt make the list of finalists to design the next City Hall, but he hopes another local architect gets the job.

That remains uncertain, as THA Architects, one of three architecture firms in the running for the high-profile job, is from Portland.

Poticha said it would be a mistake for municipal government to hire an out-of-town firm as the lead architect to design the Eugene City Hall.

There is something about designing your own house in your own community instead of designing a house for somebody else in another place, said Poticha, who had teamed with TBG Architects + Planners of Eugene in an unsuccessful effort to get the City Hall design work.

A team of city officials is deciding whether to hire THA or one of the two Eugene-based finalists, Rowell Brokaw Architects or Robertson Sherwood Architects, for the job.

The teams deliberations could lead to an announcement possibly later this week to hire one of the firms, or for the city to undergo another round of evaluations of some or all of the finalists, said Heather Nelson, city purchasing analyst.

We have three really great proposals and three great teams to choose from, she said. This is a really big project, and we want to make sure that we select the best team to suit our needs.

City officials originally had planned to announce the top selection last Friday, though they reserved the right to take more time if necessary.

Nelson, who declined to say how the three finalists are ranked, said she didnt think the delay was related to whether the city might choose an out-of-area firm.

I dont think that is a primary concern at this point, she said. But I cant say exactly what is being discussed right now.
