DEERFIELD Ever wonder if architects or designers have dabbled in fine arts like painting? Brushwood Gallery can answer that question starting Sunday.
The gallery, located in the historic Brushwood home at Ryerson Woods, 21850 N. Riverwoods Road, will host an exhibition by the Chicago art group everyOther, a collection of architects, designers and artists, through Aug. 30.
waterCOLOR skySCAPE will open with a reception from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, July 14. The reception and exhibition are open to the public. Admission is free.
We keep a sharp eye out for all different kinds of perspectives for art relating to nature, said Sophie Mitchell, executive director of Friends of Ryerson Woods. After seeing some of this groups work, we invited them to have a group showing here.
Brushwood has already hosted the works of two members of everyOther, Phil Enquist, leader of the global city design practice at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, in 2009 and Cynthia Winter of Cynthia Winter Architects LLC in 2012.

Out-of-state registered architects should only be able to serve on architecture and landmarks commissions in town if qualified Florida registered architects are unavailable, the Ordinances, Rules and Standards Committee recommended Wednesday.
The Architectural Commission and Landmarks Preservation Commission currently consist of seven members and three alternate members. At least two members, but no more than three, are registered architects in the state. All have to be town residents registered to vote in Florida, except for one nonresident architect position on the landmarks board.
The committee discussed whether to widen the pool and allow registered architects from other states to fill the two architectural seats. Members asked whether out-of-state architects were fully familiar with design and building-related issues in Florida, and whether there was a need for more candidates. There are at least a dozen architects registered in Florida eligible to serve on town boards, according to town documents.
Several residents said there is a need.
Were not opening ourselves up to get the best of the best, said William Strawbridge. What concerns me most is that we are very well qualified to handle our vernacular buildings, but where we have big trouble is anything thats modern or post modern.
William Feldkamp said there might not be an issue now with finding qualified Florida architects to serve on town boards, but that its worth the while to worry about the day it does happen.
Strawbridge and Feldkamp suggested the board recommend opening one architect seat up to anyone whos licensed. We protect our local, but we allow the best if they want to show up, Strawbridge said.
However, the committee pointed out that out-of-state architects can still apply for one of the other five non-architect seats on town boards.
Lets keep it the way it is today, except in instances we cant find a registered Florida architect, Committee Chairman Bill Diamond said.
The recommendation will go before the Town Council.

ITASCA, IL--(Marketwired - Jul 10, 2013) - DLA Architects, Ltd. has recently awarded scholarships to graduating high school seniors for their demonstrations of knowledge and interest in architecture. Students submitted videos highlighting how their educational spaces have created a quality learning environment, a challenge inspired by the firm's "form follows learning" philosophy. Since its inception 16 years ago, the THINK [about architecture] Scholarship Program has helped hundreds of students pay for classes, books, and other higher education necessities. From a group of $250 School Level Scholarship winners, the company has recently selected two State Level winners.
This year's first place State Level Scholarship award of $1,000 was presented to Michael Zimmer of Elgin High School. In addition, Cynthia Barrios from Ridgewood High School was awarded $500 as this year's State Level Runner Up. Both students will be presented their awards at "A Day in the Life of an Architect," an event hosted by DLA as a bonus to the winners. The event will give each student a chance to work with and observe an architectural professional for the day.
As it has for more than a decade and a half, the THINK [about architecture] Scholarship Program shows DLA's dedication to the educational design sector, as well as the stakeholders they ultimately serve. The company is proud of the program's vitality and the positive impact it has made in each community. DLA looks forward to bolstering interest in architecture and related professions among younger generations through this continued effort.

CORAL GABLES, Fla., July 10, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --The South Florida Business Journal has released its annual listing of South Florida's Top 25 Architecture firms, and SB Architects has jumped to an impressive 7th place ranking. The results of this year's annual listing highlight the dramatic growth of the Coral Gables firm which, after many years on the publication's Top 25 ranking, did not make the list in 2012.
The firm's dramatic resurgence is an indicator of the state's economic turn-around, as well as the diverse, international nature of SB Architects' practice. "I am extremely excited about the direction of our practice," states Scott Lee, President and Principal of SB Architects. "The creative balance and energy shared by our offices in Miami, San Francisco and Shenzhen is outstanding, and I look forward to a strong year ahead."
Established in 1975, the firm has active projects across the globe, as well as high-profile projects in South Florida and the Caribbean. In what is surely one of the region's most exciting projects, SB Architects is working with innovative real estate company Dacra on an ambitious expansion of the Miami Design District, which will dramatically increase the district's retail, commercial and art exhibition space, and bring a jewel of a boutique hotel to this burgeoning area of Miami.
"We are approaching this project as a groundbreaking experience, a paradigm shift of sorts. It really is a model of the future, of a whole new way to approach retail, design and architecture," says Kevin Dunn, Vice President and Principal in the firm's Coral Cables office.
SB Architects recently celebrated the debut of its latest project Dorado Beach, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve, on the island of Puerto Rico. This one-of-a-kind destination, which opened in December 2012, is just the second Reserve Property in the world and the first in the Western Hemisphere. The firm also designed the hugely successful Bahia Beach Golf Resort, anchored by the St. Regis Bahia Beach, and orchestrated the renovation of the Ritz-Carlton San Juan, making SB Architects a leading figure in Puerto Rico's emergence as one of the Caribbeans most desirable destinations. The firm's portfolio includes a wealth of projects in the Caribbean and Latin America.
In over 50 years of design practice, SB Architects has maintained a long-standing reputation for excellence in the planning and design of large-scale, multi-phased projects. The firm regularly competes with some of the largest architecture firms in the world, yet it has continued to maintain a hands-on, boutique practice, driven by collaboration, teamwork and individual client relationships. The firm's work spans the globe, and includes projects throughout the United States, in Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean, Asia and the Middle East. Known for site-sensitive, contextually appropriate design, SB Architects has received over 200 awards for design excellence.
