New construction projects worldwide are calling for green areas inside and outside buildings creating a pleasing and calming atmosphere. Artificial foliage, including artificial boxwood hedge on walls is being used because it is inexpensive, durable, and requires little maintenance.
Mark Steele, San Diego Architect at M.W. Steele Group, Inc talks about using artificial hedge and foliage in commercial and residential properties. "My wife and I started the San Diego Architect firm 30 years ago and use our house as a ongoing project. What we like about the artificial hedge is that we created a uniform surface where you don't see any seams," Mark added.
Artificial foliage such as artificial boxwood hedge mat not only looks good, but has sound proofing qualities. Artificial hedge mats applied to walls can reduce echoes dramatically. Hedge mat panels placed strategically will deflect sounds from carrying across rooms or courtyards. This decreases stress and increases privacy in an office environment.
The green fad in building design caught on in Berlin, carried in booming Australia, Dubai, and Sao Paulo. Architects globally are using artificial foliage in ever more creative way, combining the green artificial plants with some real ones, rock, marble and water, and glass. The results are pleasing to both eye and ear as people no longer have to shout over one another in spaces with bad acoustics.
Municipalities are also using artificial foliage on sound walls bordering freeways, on school properties, courthouses, and other municipal buildings. Artificial foliage has been proven extremely cost effective and durable. Online retailers of artificial foliage can also provide large quantities of artificial hedge mat, bushes, plants, and flowers at wholesale prices.
Mark Steele, a well known architect at M.W. Steele Group, Inc in San Diego, CA is using artificial hedge for commercial and residential designs. Mark is the Geranium Street Floral Architect of the Month.

Newswise Studio Gang Architects, led by renowned Chicago architect Jeanne Gang, has been selected to design a major new residence hall and dining commons on the north end of the University of Chicago campus, officials announced.
The signature facility, which will house roughly 800 undergraduates, is designed around the Colleges distinctive House System, with an emphasis on building community. Studio Gang will collaborate with Mortenson Construction on the project, which is expected to open in 2016.
Occupying the space where Pierce Tower and Dining Commons now stands, at the corner of 55th Street and University Avenue, the project will create a new gateway connecting the University to the Hyde Park community to the north and enhancing pedestrian flow.
John W. Boyer, Dean of the College, said the project represents a milestone in the development of the Colleges residential life.
The University is far stronger when we create vibrant communities of learning and friendship for our students in our residential system, Boyer said. High-quality collegiate housing, located centrally on the campus, is an enormous asset in supporting the educational goals of the faculty, in developing active and stimulating learning communities among our students, and in encouraging patterns of lifelong friendships among our alumni.
This building embodies our vision for our housing system, said Karen Warren Coleman, Vice President for Campus Life and Student Services. It will serve as an incubator for intellectual and personal development to the benefit of the students who live there and the entire campus community, she said.
The Studio Gang-Mortenson proposal was chosen from among dozens of entries through a rigorous process involving faculty, staff, students, and University and community stakeholders.
This world-class design from Jeanne Gang, one of the most innovative architects of our time, continues our commitment to architecture that cultivates a scholarly community, said Steve Wiesenthal, Associate Vice President and University Architect. We are fortunate to be working with her and her team, and delighted that, after looking around the globe, we found the best answer here in Chicago.
Intimate communities in a big city
Jeanne Gang said the project presents an opportunity to advance the Universitys goals toward a cohesive, sustainable campus populated by great architecture and strong ties to the Hyde Park community.

LONDON, July 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
Fahad Al Tamimi Architects, one of the UK's foremost firms for residential, commercial and conservation architectural design, will shortly open a new office in Dubai.
The move will expand the current team with the addition of two further members, Grant Petersson and Amelia Wallingford.
Grant has considerable experience in the architectural field, having studied architectural engineering at university in the US before spending 12 years at the prestigious LTM Arkitekter firm in Norway. He will oversee the construction of new properties and the adaptation of current establishments.
Amelia has specialised in sustainable architectural work, and joins Fahad Al Tamimi Architects from Ernsthafte Konstruktion, a German firm. Her expertise will be utilised in the improvement of standing properties, and she will be instrumental in the design of eco-friendly architectural projects.
Founder and Managing Director Fahad Al Tamimi commented on the new opening: "Having been born in Dubai, I felt it was a step in the right direction to open a branch of our firm in this thriving city.
"We have been established in London for ten years and recognised with awards for our achievements in this area, and so the expansion seemed to be a natural progression for our company.
"With Grant and Amelia's expertise we aim to provide the eco-friendly design and precise construction that is highly desirable in Dubai at this time.
"It will be a challenge, but one that we will relish."
Amelia Wallingford added: "I'm very excited to be part of this momentous occasion for Fahad Al Tamimi Architects, and I look forward to adding to the company's great portfolio."

Imagine youre 8, 10 or even 15 years old and youre being asked to describe your dream house. Not just describe it, but also sketch, map out and build a model of it. Would it look like your house?
For a group of students who attended the 2013 Architects in the Making (AIM) summer camp at the University of Miami, this was one of their projects along with designing sneakers, building structures out of plastic straws and creating animals out of recycled materials.
AIM summer camp is a two-week program that happens once a year. Children ages 8-15 attend from all over Miami-Dade County for $100, director Rick Ruiz said. Now in its eighth year, AIM has expanded by bringing in better materials, field trips and programs such as the Frank Lloyd Wright Taliesin Program, which teaches students to research, design and construct their own models for environmental sites.
Every morning, about 90 kids make their way into the the lecture hall at the University of Miamis School of Architecture for a brief presentation before splitting up into studios to work on their projects.
Doug Patt, creator of the YouTube series and website How to Architect, explained how to sketch last week via Skype.
Kids think its complicated, Ruiz said. But he simplifies the way sketching is done.
The university donates the space, including School of Architecture studios, where campers learn about sustainability and green architecture, historic preservation and the principles of design.
Architecture is everywhere, camp counselor Pilar Alva said. Kids are divided into three studios: beginning, intermediate and advanced.
In the advanced studio, campers learn about incorporating sustainable practices into their projects, Alva said. Some kids built models with plants that use rainwater to grow and survive.
Matthew Vasquez, 10, came up with his own solar-panel bookbag with outlets inside.
