The Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) in Salem, Massachusetts, has chosen Ennead Architects to design its 175,000-square-foot expansion. The firm picks up where London-based Rick Mather Architects left offcompleting master planning and renovation of the museums Dodge wingfollowing principal Rick Mathers death earlier this year.
PEM selected Ennead from a group of architecture practices that were invited to participate in a design charrette this summer. "Ennead Architects impressed us with their creative dexterity, in-depth understanding of our institution, and thoughtful design solutions for the museum's complex architectural program, Dan Monroe, PEM's director and CEO, said in a statement.
"PEM's expansion presents an exciting design challenge and an opportunity to reimagine one of the oldest and fastest growing museums in the country," added Ennead design partner Richard Olcott. "We are committed to creating a design that functionally integrates the museum's existing campus with a bold new vision that enhances the museum both aesthetically and experientially."
The museums $200 million expansion will add new galleries, public program and education spaces, and a restaurant, as well as improvements to the collection, conservation, and exhibition processing areas. Groundbreaking will start in 2015, and the new wing will open in 2019.

CHARLES CITY Architects for the new middle school to be built as an addition to the existing high school are proposing that construction begin in June 2014, and that the building be ready to occupy by August 2015.
Representatives form BLDD Architects of Davenport, the firm the school board hired to design the new middle school, were at Mondays School Board meeting give a report on the $17.6 million project.
BLDD representative Sam Johnson said the schematic design phase is already under way.
September through October will be the design development phase, which will involve more detailed plans.
Construction documents are to be prepared from November through February, with bidding on the project to take place in March or April.
Johnson said BLDD representatives have been speaking to staff, parents and students to get their ideas for the new middle school.
He said they want it to be a magnet school that will attract people to the community.
The idea is to design the school so students can learn the skills they need in the modern world, such as STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) skills, critical thinking skills, people skills, technology skills and media literacy, according to Johnson.
The building design will be flexible, allowing for both small-group and large-group learning, he said.
It also will be built to allow for more connection with industry and to establish the school as a community center with increased public access, according to Johnson.

Maharashtra govt to invite foreign architects to build Shivaji memorial Mumbai, Aug 9 (PTI) Architects from across the globe will be invited by the Maharashtra government to build the statue and memorial site of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the Arabian sea.
The government has already zeroed in on a 16-acre islet, which is one-and-a-half kms from the Raj Bhawan.
"We would be publishing advertisement through our DGIPR's website calling in architects from across the world to come forward with their expression of interests to build the statue," city guardian minister and state rural development minister Jayant Patil said yesterday.
The draft of the advertisement is ready and within a fortnight it would be published, he said.
After receiving expression of interests from architects, the state government will describe the plan and designing of the memorial to them.
"At present the National Institute of Oceanography has been conducting environmental survey of the site. It would take another 9-10 months for them to finish the survey," Patil said.
The Shivaji memorial will also house a museum showcasing the Maratha warrior's life, Patil said, adding that it will be a best tourist attraction, which will inspire new generation to know about Shivaji Maharaj.
"The memorial will be of international standards. The journey of tourists will remain incomplete if they do not visit the site. It will also be of national importance," he added.

VANCOUVER, Aug. 6, 2013 /CNW/ - Like many architects around the world, Gastown architects, Iredale Group Architecture, have been incorporating sustainability into the built environment for several decades. However, for the month of August, they're incorporating it into every aspect of their personal diet to help bring a new level of conscientiousness to the issue and to their work.
By now everyone has heard of the 100-mile diet, the goal of which is to consume food and beverages that are grown, produced and packaged all within a 100-mile radius of your home. As such, Iredale Group Architecture determined that the diet could be undertaken to help the architects and staff to think innovatively about embedding sustainability into every design decision; to inspire staff and to make the issue of sustainability highly personal. "It's easy to write a piece of narrative for our website that says we care about the environment, it's a lot more impactful to consider energy consumption and preservation every time we reach for an apple or a cup of tea", Katheleen Dixon, Marketing Director, Iredale Group Architecture.
"We've just started the challenge and there is a lot of debate within the office, proponents believe that the 100 Mile Diet is beneficial to help diversify local economies and communities and will help with the overall environmental footprint as food travels far fewer distances. Opponents feel that growing crops or maintaining livestock in climates that haven't traditionally supported such crops will expend far more energy than having the same produce shipped in from other parts of the world" says Stefan Walsh, Project Manager and LEED Professional at Iredale.
Despite the differing of opinions, Denis Gautier, Designer and BIM Technician at Iredale says, "The goal is to bring these questions into our consciousness. I don't know that we'll advocate or oppose the theory of the 100 mile diet in the end, but I like that we're asking questions about our food sources and our communities. I know that everyone in the office is feeling excited, inspired, and empowered by the 'diet' and that will translate into our working relationships and into our design product."
Throughout the month of August, Iredale will be hosting several discussions and in-house events with local thought leaders like Saul Good Ltd., Sole Foods, and Spud.ca. Dixon concludes, "Vancouver is a great place to undertake a challenge such as this, because there are so many great resources. We have set up garden tours and mystery box challenges for staff to help keep us focused and motivated, as well as a design charrette for a Vancouver community at the diet's conclusion so that we can identify and embed the best sustainability ideas into a real workable environment."
Founded in 1980, Iredale Group Architecture is a full service architecture firm, serving clients throughout Canada, from our offices in Vancouver and Victoria. We offer our clients a full array of architectural services, including: architectural design, interior design, master planning, LEED facilitation, heritage rehabilitation, restoration and adaptive re-use, as well as structural engineering and building envelope science. Our firm's focus remains on creating spaces that reflect the flow of human interaction, which promotes culture and community, and reflects the structure's contextual environment. A passionate ambassador for the environment, Iredale Group Architecture investigates the integration of innovative sustainability opportunities into every project.
