Architects say the fire that burnt down St Kilda's much-loved Stokehouse restaurant on Friday night has provided an opportunity to build a new landmark beach destination on the foreshore.

''It's about time inner Melbourne had a really exciting piece of beach architecture,'' said Philip Goad, professor of architecture at Melbourne University.

Hundreds of people watched on Friday night as a fire that took hold in the restaurant's kitchen razed the building. Port Phillip Council has demolished the remains.

And, like the debate following the St Kilda Pier kiosk fire in 2003, locals and urban design experts are divided over what should be rebuilt on the Stokehouse site: a heritage replica of the early 1900s building or a contemporary venue.

''I would like to see a similar process to the one engaged in to rebuild the historic St Kilda pier kiosk,'' deputy mayor and local councillor for the area Serge Thomann said.

The restaurant sat on Crown land, and the state government and the council in conjunction with the Van Haandel Group, which holds a 21-year lease over the site, will decide what happens.

New York (CBS New York) The fourth annual Architects For Animals: Giving Shelter event takes place on Thursday, January 30th at Manhattans Steelcase Showroom at 4 Columbus Circle.

This fundraiser will benefit the Mayors Alliance For New York Citys Animals and will feature nine outdoor cat shelters designed and created by some of the citys leading architectural firms.

According to the Mayors Alliance, these imaginatively designed yet practical structures will keep cats safe and warm during the winter months. Following the exhibition, the shelters will be installed in pre-determined outdoor locations throughout New York City where colonies of community cats are cared for by certified caretakers. All of the cats have undergone TNR. Trap, neuter, return, Alliance President Jane Hoffman told 1010 WINS, is the key to keeping down cat intake at Animal Care and Control, so its really crucial to our whole mission of reducing euthanasia at our city shelters.

This years participating architectural teams include Bailly & Bailly, Carlton Architecture, Francis Cauffman, deSoto studio Architects, Incorporated, Elham Valipay and Haleh Atabaki of Mish Mish, M Moser Associates, Two One Two Design, and Zimmerman Workshop Architecture + Design, to name a few.

Admission is a $25 donation ($10 for Certified TNR Caretakers) and includes the exhibit, hors doeuvres, and drinks. A raffle also will be featured this year. You may RSVP in advance online at AnimalAllianceNYC.org.
