David Beckham's architects recommend Port of Miami site - March 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

David Beckham, center with MLS commissioner Don Garber (L) and Miami mayor Carlos Gimenez (R), is eyeing the Port of Miami for his future MLS expansion franchise's stadium location.

MIAMI (AP) - David Beckham's architects and advisers have recommended the Port of Miami as the stadium site for the Major League Soccer expansion team that will be owned by the former English national team captain.

The plan announced Monday would have an open-air stadium with views of the bay and the downtown skyline. The capacity could be as low as 21,000 or as high as 35,000.

More than 30 sites were evaluated for the stadium. In addition to the recommended site, Marlins Park, Florida International University and a site near the city's airport remain under consideration for the team.

There is no year set for the team to start play.

John Alschuler, chairman of the consulting firm HR&A, said the earliest the new stadium could be ready was 2018. If the team starts play earlier, it would have to play in a temporary home, such as Marlins Park or FIU.

Alschuler said a stadium at the Port of Miami would be built without the use of taxpayer money and that fans could drive there by using the Port of Miami tunnel and seeking limited parking spaces.

Beckham's group envisions perhaps as many as 4,000 fans per game making a ''seven- or eight- minute walk'' across the bridge from where the Miami Heat plays its NBA home games at AmericanAirlines Arena.

''The March to the Match' is a soccer tradition common in Europe and in certain parts of the United States,'' Alschuler said. ''They hang out in bars and march to the match.''

16 Luminous Buildings In Modern Scandinavia - March 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Those of us who live close to the equator take a daily alternation of light and dark for granted. But in the far Scandinavian north, brief summers of blinding, perpetual sunlight alternate with months of bleak, S.A.D.-inducing darkness, punctuated with ecstatic bursts of Aurora Borealis. In the past few decades, Scandinavian architects have come up with some breathtaking ways to weave these extreme, mystical-seeming light conditions into the very designs of their buildings. In Nordic Light: Modern Scandinavian Architecture, architecture Henry Plummer showcases 50 of these elegant solutions throughout Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, in more than 500 radiant photographs.

For me, light is the most ecstatic architectural experience there is, and in many ways the best architecture is a preparation for the experience of light, Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa once wrote. To let the light in but keep the cold out, some Northern architects transform buildings into optical instruments: theyre shaped as funnels, aimed at the most luminous points of the horizon, and hollowed inside, directing light to the darkest rooms.

Pale materials are especially beloved of these Northern architects, as they reflect and magnify faint illumination like projection screens. The blond pine of Finland's Turku Chapel, the 5 million yellow bricks of Copenhagen's Grundtvigs Church, and the silvery-white walls of Finland's Myyrmki Church turn interiors into radiant havens. In Regnbeun Arkitekters Antvorskov Church in Denmark, pure, white light brightens gradually towards the altar, where a slit in the roof and side windows let light stream in. But all this incandescence isnt just practical, Plummer writes: This peaceful radiance, devoid of matter, touches a chord in the human soul.

Israeli architects face suspension by international body - March 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is the latest professional organization to boycott Israel, the Guardian reports.

The RIBA council decided last week to call for the suspension of its Israeli counterpart, the Israeli Association of United Architects, by the global architectural body the International Union of Architects.

The motion was passed by 23 votes to 16 with 10 abstentions.

Addressing council members before the vote, former RIBA head Angela Brady said that failure to back the motion would send a clear message to the world that we as an institution turn a blind eye or by inaction support whats going on land grabs, forced removals, killing the human rights, and reinforcement of apartheid.

But other council members pointed to human rights violations in other parts of the world, such as North Korea, which is a member of RIBA. "Don't you think architects are designing prison camps and torture chambers there?" asked one council member, Francesca Weal.

Prof Baruch Baruch of the IAUA said the decision was "astonishing". He added: "I don't think architects can be blamed for government policies. I don't think boycotts will help to solve any of the problems in the Middle East."

His organization, which includes Israeli-Arab architects, was not complicit in settlement construction. "A lot of members are against settlements and building in the West Bank. They won't be helped by a boycott."

The vote follows a similar motion earlier in the week by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland.
