Architects from Lincoln and Omaha spoke against a plan to merge the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Architecture into the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts during the public comment portion of Friday's Board of Regents meeting.
Proposed by Chancellor Harvey Perlman last year, the merger would create a School of Architecture -- led by a director rather than a dean -- within the renamed Hixson-Lied College of the Arts and Architecture.
UNL administrators planned to carry out the merger later this year, but regents said they were not ready to make a decision on the future of the college, citing a need for more information.
Several architects stood in opposition to the proposal Friday, saying it would negatively affect the quality of education provided at the college and UNLs ability to produce graduates capable of getting jobs with top Nebraska firms.
Patrick McDermott, a 1968 UNL graduate, said it'simportant that regents approach a potential merger with caution. Four decades ago, he said, the Board of Regents turned down a proposed merger between the College of Architecture and the College of Engineering.
Specifically, McDermott said the cost savings of no longer having a dean of architecture would be far outweighed by a future in which less-skilled architecture graduates are entering the workforce.
This decision may also traumatically impact the quality of student the university is able to attract in the future, as well as the quality of faculty that the university is able to retain, he said. Nothing happens at a university without strong faculty.
Striving for an independent college that continues to produce highly sought graduates should be UNLs goal, McDermott added. Now, UNL graduates collectively rank ninth among architecture graduates nationwide on licensing exam scores.
Dan Spiry, senior principal at BVH Architects, said his initial reaction to the proposed merger was disappointment -- not in joining the fine and performing arts college -- but in the perception that architecture is not a discipline distinct from other arts.
I get it when I put on my management hat, I understand the need to establish priorities and use resources wisely, Spiry said. I think architecture is a unique profession and for that reason I think it's best they stand alone and make themselves relevant and distinguish themselves among the community of the university.

Charleston firm ZMM Architects and Engineers won an honor award from the American Institute of Architecture on Saturday for designing Edgewood Elementary. The $22 million school is designed to serve as a learning tool, and utilizes bright colors and flexible spaces to excite students and encourage group work.
Seven West Virginia buildings, including a Charleston elementary school and a visual arts center in Huntington, were honored with awards from the American Institute of Architects at its dinner for the West Virginia Design Awards Saturday evening.
The awards highlight the good work that goes on in the industry each year, said Johnathan Adler with the AIA West Virginia chapter.
Buildings are what excite people, thats what brings people here, Adler said. Buildings are the face of the community.
The entries were judged by a jury lead by Pittsburgh-based architect Rob Pfaffmann.
The West Virginia chapter of the AIA has about 250 members, of which around 200 are architects.
Only one out-of-state firm won an award. Maryland-based GriD Architects earned one of three honor awards, the organizations highest honor, for a vacation home in Berkeley County.
Charleston-based ZMM Architects and Engineers won an honor award for Edgewood Elementary. Firm principal David Ferguson said the building is different than other schools.
Kanawha County wanted a school that was completely different, Ferguson said.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Architects from Lincoln and Omaha are speaking out against a plan to merge the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Architecture into the universitys Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts.
Several architects spoke against the plan during Fridays university Board of Regents meeting, the Lincoln Journal Star reported (http://bit.ly/1z60sfu ). They said the move would negatively affect the quality of education provided at the college and UNLs ability to produce graduates capable of getting jobs with top firms.
UNL College of Architecture graduates currently rank ninth among architecture graduates nationwide on licensing exam scores, said Patrick McDermott, a 1968 graduate of the college.
The cost savings of no longer having a dean of architecture would not be worth the risk of having less-skilled architecture graduates enter the workforce, he said.
This decision may also traumatically impact the quality of student the university is able to attract in the future, as well as the quality of faculty that the university is able to retain, McDermott said. Nothing happens at a university without strong faculty.
Dan Spiry, senior principal at BVH Architects in Omaha, said hes disappointed by the perception among the universitys leadership that architecture is not a discipline distinct from other arts.
I think architecture is a unique profession, and for that reason I think its best they stand alone and make themselves relevant and distinguish themselves among the community of the university, Spiry said.
Merle Bachman, a member of the College of Architectures professional advisory council, also called the merger a bad idea.
While both deal with aesthetics, there is no connection after that, he said. Architecture will lose a dean to a lesser position of a director who will be less experienced and less connected to the profession thats getting relegated to second tier.
The merger was proposed last year by Chancellor Harvey Perlman. The new merged college would be named the Hixson-Lied College of the Arts and Architecture.
