Spokane Valley is having a kickoff meeting on Monday with Architects West Inc., the company that has been awarded a contract to build a new cityhall.

Gabe Gallinger, Spokane Valley development services manager and the manager of the city hall project, said hes excited to get started on the $14.4 millionproject.

On Monday, city staff and Architects West will talk about the public participation part of the project, among many otherthings.

As in previous years, the public will also have a chance to help choose one winner in the Architects Challenge Showdown. Every entry will be included in the Showdown, where the public will have the chance to vote for their favorite project.

Juried winners of the Architects Challenge will receive a VIP winners' trip to Minneapolis and Marvin's headquarters of Warroad, Minn., including AIA-CES credits. The project named "Best in Show" will receive an advertorial in Architectural Digest magazine, as well their project featured in two videos created by the magazine. Additionally, the Showdown winner will receive an expense-paid trip to Greenbuild in Washington, D.C. The Architects Challenge will close for submission on May 1, 2015.

Marvin Windows and Doors Accepting Entries for Annual Design Awards

Landscape architects on Wednesday unveiled four potential concepts for the new open space near the Vikings stadium in downtown Minneapolis.

Each concept takes a slightly different approach to the biggest design challenge facing the project: Portland Avenue, which will run right through the middle of the two-block park being called "The Commons."

Some of the options downplay that fact, with landscaping that flows from one side to the other. Others treat the street as a dividing line.

To make any of the concepts happen, boosters need to raise about $20 million. The money will likely come from public and private sources. Council Member Jacob Frey, who represents the area, says he's confident they'll succeed.

"Putting icing on a cake always costs a little bit of money," he said. "We are right now reaching out to numerous different entities to ensure that this park is not just adequate but is freaking awesome."

Hargreaves Associates, the landscape design firm, is collecting feedback from the public. It will narrow the options down to a single proposal it plans to unveil it in May.
