American Institute of Architects: Economic Update for Q1 2015 - Video
It's a tricky time for public libraries. In addition to the constant threat of budget cuts, these time-honored cultural institutions also have to fight to stay as relevant as possible in this rapidly digitalizing world. In some cases, this might mean ramping up public access to the Internet; in others, it might mean bringing in 3-D printers for community use. And as evidenced by this fresh batch of winners in the American Institute of Architects's 2015 Library Building Awards, the design of the structures themselves certainly matters. Whether it's the exuberant renovation of a Brutalist masterpiece by Paul Rudolph or a new San Antonio library built largely of locally-made materials, each winning design tells the story of how thoughtful architecture can help the library evolve and keep up with the times.

After a flood in 2008 severely damaged Cedar Rapids' existing public library, the city set out to build a new central library that's meets the broad needs of the 21st century. This mission translated into a more streamlined interior ("more like an Apple Store and less like the DMV") with shorter shelves that "preserve views across the building" and strategically placed staff kiosks, as well as floor-to-ceiling glass windows that wrap around the structure and engage with the street and public plaza. While the new library is 10,000 square feet larger than the original structure, it uses "less than one third of the energy consumed by the old building on a per square foot basis."

The Brutalist library originally designed by midcentury architect Paul Rudolph some 40 years ago has been updated into an attractive new campus hub via bold and bright graphics on the interior, not to mention glazing and metal sunshades that turn it from "an 'energy monster' into a sustainable benchmark. The school estimates that the renovated library with its new addition is getting three times as many visitors as before.

BEND, Ore. -
Bend 2030 and the American Institute of Architects presented a Housing Solutions Showcase in downtown Bend on Friday. Architects displayed ideas to show what more density and other solutions to our housing availability and affordability issues can look like.
Seth Anderson, director of the AIA's Southwestern Oregon chapter, created a multi-living structure for senior living. His project is based in Texas, but as a fellow Bendite, he recommends the area needs a combination of options.
"Townhouses and apartment-type living, and more mixed use living," he said. "Like we have some in downtown Bend, but seeing that grow wider In Bend would be great."
R.J. Johnson from Bend 2030 says a showcase like this creates more energy and more education for the community to get involved in seeing what other housing options can be like.
If you weren't able to make it Friday night, the architectural designs will be displayed at The Environmental Center in downtown Bend through May 31, and a slideshow of all the designs will be available later on the Bend 2030 website.

The New Jersey chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA-NJ) announced that Robert Cozzarelli, AIA, will serve the American Institute of Architects as a Regional Representative to the organization's Strategic Council. The Belleville resident was installed during AIA-NJ's annual awards gala in Moorestown.
Cozzarelli is a principal of both Rutherford-based Cozzarelli-Cirminiello Architects and Bertone Cozzarelli Healthcare Architects, the latter of which specializes in designing long-term care facilities, such as hospitals and nursing homes.
The newly created AIA Strategic Council's role is to advise the organization's Board, including assembling goals and objectives, recommending public policy, and disseminating information and insights.
The council is designed to allow the organization to confront the future of architecture proactively and investigate emerging issues in business, practice and design.
Cozzarelli will be one of 35 representatives, each of whom will represent different regions across the United States. Previously the AIA-NJ regional director, Cozzarelli will continue his activities as he transitions to the new, similar role of regional representative.
Cozzarelli is an award-winning architect and planner with over 30 years of professional experience. He specializes in educational, recreational, institutional and residential design for federal, state, municipal and private-sector clients.
Over the course of his decades-long AIA-NJ membership, Cozzarelli has earned many accolades, including his award as AIA-NJ Architect of the Year in 2009 and his 2005 Distinguished Service honor. Other awards include the UNICO Millie Grazie Award for his pro-bono services throughout the state, and his recognition as Columbus Day & Celebration Italian-American Man-of-the-Year.
In 2008, he received an Honor Roll Medallion from NJIT Alumni for exemplifying leadership in architecture, planning and design.
Cozzarelli also founded AIA-NJ's popular CANstruction event, the charitable design competition the organization arranges each fall.
Cozzarelli is a member of AIA Newark and Suburban Architects, one of AIA-NJ's six local sections, for which he has also served as president.
