Beware of appliance repair scam -

Jonathan Davis, 37 is wanted by Cobb County Police
COBB COUNTY, Ga -- If you need repairs for any of your appliances you might want to pay attention to a warning from Cobb County Police. They are looking for a suspect who has scammed consumers out of thousands of dollars.
Since January six residents in Cobb County have filed criminal complaints against Jonathan Davis, age 37. Lt. Destiny Davidson said Davis is a suspect in similar scams in Douglas County, Fulton County and DeKalb County. She said he purports to be an appliance repair man. "He does an initial examination of their appliance and usually says we'll have to order this part or that part and requests money up front," Lt. Davidson said.
Even though she's not alone, Jennifer Ciarletta of Marietta said she feels embarrassed that she and her husband were duped by Davis. "There's a part of you that feels silly and there's a part of you that's like, then you get kind of mad," she said.
Ciarletta said her dish washer broke and she reached out to Davis after searching for someone to repair it on line. "So what he told my husband was that it was $240 for a part plus $150 for the repairs and he needed the money for the part up front," she said.
Her husband wrote the check for $240 and Davis cashed it immediately. She said he never came back to their house to fix the dishwasher.
Marietta resident Claudia Morace said she wrote Davis a check for $500 for a part to fix her expensive stove. She said Davis had the audacity to come back to her house and tell her she needed more work. "The second time he came out it was just for another check for $124 and I've never heard from him again," she said.
"Besides the fact that I work hard for my money, as most people do, the second thing that hurts is I feel stupid," Morace said. "I feel that I was taken advantage of and should have known better."
Lt. Davidson said the victims got in touch with Jonathan Davis by Googling "appliance repairs" on line. She said Davis was able to manipulate Google so that his bogus companies would come up at the top of the list. She listed three of his companies as Apex Appliance, Atlanta Appliance and Triple Crown Movers.
"Apparently he's also learned to link himself into actual reputable businesses so that when people click on those businesses it re-directs to his phone number somehow," Lt. Davidson said.

Viking appliances will now be offering Sub-Zero authorized appliance repairman to customers nationwide. To celebrate Viking Appliances is slashing prices on all appliance repair from now until June.
(PRWEB) May 15, 2012
Viking appliances will now be offering Sub-Zero authorized appliance repairman to customers nationwide. To celebrate Viking Appliances is slashing prices on all appliance repair from now until June. Sub-Zero offers some of thew finest high-end appliances available anywhere. Sub-Zero manufactures two series of built-in refrigeration as well as wine storage and undercounter units. Each refrigerator model usually comes in two variations, namely a stainless steel exterior or a customizable exterior in an overlay version. The latter option allows the buyer to install kitchen cabinet panels on the door(s) to match with the rest of the kitchen. Its refrigerators are designed with a 24-inch (61 cm) depth and can be installed flush with kitchen cabinets of the same standard depth to provide an integrated look. This kind of built-in refrigerator is usually wider than normal to compensate for the shallower depth in order to maintain acceptable storage volume.
The Sub-Zero 424 Wine Cooler has held virtually the same design since the early 90's. It is the only under-counter wine cooler in its class to be able to keep wine as low as 38 F (3 C). It has two temperature zones and can be hooked up to a house alarm.
A Sub-Zero refrigerator is heavier than most refrigerators offered by GE, Frigidaire, or LG. An average refrigerator weighs 250300 pounds (110140 kg), but a Sub-Zero can weigh as much as 800 pounds (360 kg) and can require four delivery men to move the refrigerator unit into a kitchen, while most refrigerators usually only require two delivery men. Also, a typical Sub-Zero unit is bigger than the basic home refrigerator. Some Sub-Zero full-size models are 84 inches (2.1 m) tall and 48 inches (120 cm) wide.
Along with many other major prestige appliance brands, Sub-Zero follows a practice of restricting dissemination of the prices of their refrigerators. Their dealers are strictly vetted and must closely follow advertising and pricing procedures supplied by the manufacturer in order maintain the ability to distribute their products.

Theodore Waddy Francisco, who founded Lakeside Appliance in 1954 and whose family ran the company until they sold it in 2003, had a purpose for each day he lived.
"I don't think he ever had a day without a plan, whether it was an errand or a project or, later, volunteer work that he did. He just never sat around," said a son, Jeffrey W. Francisco of Henrico County.
The elder Francisco, who died March 21 at age 84 at his residence at Westminster Canterbury-Richmond, started what the family thinks was the largest independent appliance retailer in central Virginia in a 1,500-square-foot space across the street from what in the early 1970s would become his store at 5418 Lakeside Ave.
In 1979, he opened a West Broad Street branch, which he closed in 1984 and reopened in a tobacco warehouse at 1611 Rhoadmiller St., which became the company headquarters and distribution center. In 1985, he opened a Bon Air branch on Buford Road, followed by a short-lived store in Mechanicsville in 1987. A store he opened in 1988 on Ridge Road was consolidated in 1995 with the Broad Street store.
"He was the kind of businessman who would see a need in the company and find somebody that needed a job," his son said. He recruited family members, friends and church members to work for him "who went on to bigger and better things. I can't tell you how many of his children's friends he hired for the company.
"In a way, he was very, very generous, but he had the highest expectations and an unyielding concern for getting the job right. He had the highest concern that the customer would get what he had paid for," his son said.
During the time leading up to Mr. Francisco's funeral last Saturday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, his son said he heard many comments that began with "your father taught me how to fill in the blank. How to organize, how to handle a customer, a complaint."
Mr. Francisco led "not so much by an active role but by example," his son said.
Born at home in Frederick Hall in Louisa County, he was one of eight children of a couple who lived on wooded acreage that included a general store, which they ran.
They later moved to Beaverdam. Mr. Francisco went into the Navy when he was 18 years old and was on his way to participate in the planned invasion of Japan when World War II ended.

Campbell Co., VA - The Spring temperatures outside are really heating up the business at area repair shops. Local lawn mower mechanics are already overloaded with work, and some of them are dealing with a three-week waiting list.
They say the problem is everyone tends to wait until they need to use their mowers.
At Timberlake Appliance and Lawn Mower Repair, the rush is on.
"I enjoy it. They might not enjoy it, the guys that's working on them," said shop ownerRon Mattox.
The business's three full-time mechanics are getting up to 20 new repair jobs a day.
"Usually we'll stay busy up until the end of June," saidMattox.
"We start picking up this time of year, but not this bad, not this much," saidHead MechanicKenny Rees.
This rush is the result of everyone reacting at the same time.
"Had to fix it so I could get the grass cut. That's my chore at my house," said customerQuentin Overman.
"They see green grass and they just pile them in on you so it doesn't take long to get backed up," saidMattox.

If you repair your own appliances you know that success or failure can often hinge on whether or not you can find small plastic or metal parts that may no longer be produced. Finnish hacklab site P0RV00 H4CKLAB was able to successfuly replicate a small broken plastic part otherwise unobtainable for their Matsui MF654EWN dishwasher using a 3D Printer.
Popular 3D Printing design site ThingVerse has over 2,765 3D printing plans for replacement parts currently available. When you consider that 3D printers have only been popularly available for the past few years, it seems to me that in the near future we may be able to find many replacement parts quickly and efficiently using this method.
Until we get to that point if you have a similarly broken small part for which you can't find a replacement, you may want to find a local student or amateur hackspace or makeshop; the users there would probably welcome the challenge and design and print your part for a small fee.

Replicate Broken Appliance Parts with a 3D Printer [3D Printing]

In my first apartment, my appliance insurance saved me $230 in repairs. Since then I've learned that paying a little more for insurance doesn't only buy me peace of mind; it can actually save me money in the long run. In fact, in one year I spent $374 more in insurance premiums, but saved $3,750 as a direct result of paying more for insurance.
Car Insurance
When an ice storm glazed my neighborhood streets, I was unable to stop my car at a downward stop sign. I hit the Jeep in front of me going at a speed of 15 MPH. Luckily, the Jeep's sturdy bumper incurred no damage, but my heavy SUV's bumper was driven into the radiator, damaging it and other engine components. Repair on my vehicle cost $4,500.
Since I chose to pay $16 more a month for my car insurance, my deductible was set at $1,000 instead of $2,000 (as it had been the year before). This saved me $1,000 outright, in addition to the repair job. And since this was my first claim against my insurance, my premium didn't even go up.
Home Owner's Insurance
After renovating my home, I contacted my home insurance company to increase my coverage. I included the new hardwood floors and basement carpets in the valuation. This increased my money premium payment by $11.
A year later, the water filtration system in my fridge began leaking. Unfortunately, because the floor under the fridge is tilted backwards slightly, the water flowed into the crack between the tile and floor molding, then straight through the wall to the ceiling below. I only detected the leak when a portion of the basement ceiling collapsed.
The repair for the damage came to $5,300. Since I had included all the upgrades in my new home valuation, my insurance covered all my replacements and repairs with comparable materials. I estimate that this saved me $1,800 over and above what my insurance would have paid out without the policy update.
Traveler's Insurance
I like to buy non-refundable airline tickets at least one month before my travel date, as this lowers the price considerably. In case of a last-minute emergency, I also buy traveler's insurance at an average cost of $50. When I came down with stomach flu just before my trip to Spain, I was able to move my flight date by a week without losing my ticket. This saved me $950, since a non-refundable ticket without insurance must be used on the date specified or lost altogether.

The list of complaints goes from false diagnosis to taking payment before and not finishing the job. Now, the Better Business Bureau tells consumers be wary you may end up with customer satisfaction issues. The owner of Rooks Gameday Bar and Grill is one of a half a dozen customers who hired Lesco appliance to repair an appliance. In this case it was an exhaust fan for the Maryland Heights restaurant. Peggi Strange co-owns Rooks. She says the Lesco Technician would visit the restaurant and convinced her to buy a maintainence agreement since she uses so many different appliances. He fixed one appliance for her. But one of the four exhaust fans on the roof needed repair.
He went up on the roof said yeah that fan, you need a new motor for that fan and the other two motors they`re getting ready to go out too. They`re not really working. Peggy had to do something to keep the business open.
We had all kinds of smoke in the kitchen. We had to use fans blow it out. He said it would be four hundred dollars for that motor. So I had to pay him then so he could go ahead and order the parts.
That along with a service agreement she bought meant she spent almost a thousand dollars but then had to hire another company to fix the fan. And that second company technician gave her some surprising news.
He started working with the other two motors and all that was were, fuses were blown. And like other customers, she wants a refund. We called the co owner/technician who says he and his partner have agreed to refund money to Peggy and homeowners.
Promised repairs on dryers, washing machines, dishwashers and stoves were either partially completed or never started according to the BBB. The owners say it could take them 30 days to refund all of the estimated 3000 dollars due the customers. But they want to resolve the complaints. Some of the customers tell us its been over six months since they scheduled their service call. The promise of a refund is welcome news. Dont forget the Better Business Bureau offers tips when hiring an appliance repair service.
Things like, find a company with a proven track record, pay with a credit card get a second opinion if you feel uneasy about the diagnosis. . If you have a consumer issue call Contact 2 Mon thru Thurs 11 till 1pm. 800 782-2222. Remember when you spend your money, you should get what you pay for.
The BBB offers the following tips when hiring an appliance repair service: Look for businesses with good track records for service. Ask friends, relatives and neighbors for recommendations. Do not rely solely on information contained in advertising or on websites. The material can be misleading or inaccurate. Pay with a credit card whenever possible, so if there is a problem you can challenge the charge. If you feel uneasy about a diagnosis, contact another company for a second opinion.
