Lawson Acquatic Centre back in the swim of things - September 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

REGINA After months under a health advisory warning, a July closure and $1.8 million in renovations, the Lawson Aquatic Centre is open for business.

And yes the hot tub is open too.

Elite-level swimmers had long complained of nausea, vomiting, hospitalizations, developing asthma and persistent coughs after swimming at the pool, and the Regina Optimist Dolphin Swim Club spent months begging the city to do something.

Four months after the Regina QuAppelle Health Region issued a health advisory warning swimmers about the Lawsons poor air quality in November last year city council approved measures to improve air circulation and water quality.

Work on the facility began on July 21.

The citys acting director of facility management, Jill Hargrove, is confident the upgrades will make for a better swimming experience, saying the pool is now as good as any modern aquatic facility.

Hargrove said comprehensive testing at the facility over the past several days demonstrates the systems are working as designed.

(Swimmers) will notice an improved environment, absolutely, she said.

Most of the work has happened behind the scenes, with a new air ducting system the only visible change.

Renovations were expected to be finished by Sept. 1, but the original target date didnt allow enough time to finish construction and test the components.

Cops want air test at 'noxious' stations - September 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Cops want air test at 'noxious' stations

The police union is demanding independent air quality testing at Karratha and South Hedland Police complexes amid fresh health concerns linked to alleged ongoing mould infestations.

Union president George Tilbury claimed several staff at the Karratha station fell ill with headaches yesterday after cleaning work at the complex, where there have been complaints of mould and bacteria since 2011.

The union board planned to organise independent air quality testing for both Pilbara Police complexes.

This includes the air-conditioning duct work, to ascertain if mould, bacteria and other allergens are present in sufficient quantities to cause harm or ill health, Mr Tilbury said.

Cleaners yesterday saturated the Karratha complex with a noxious substance, leaving staff and visitors complaining about the over-powering damp smell, Mr Tilbury claimed.

But WA Police denied the allegations, saying cleaners had put tea tree oil gel packs, which were considered safe, in the air conditioners to counter mould.

Spokesman Neil Stanbury said the gel packs had been used at the Pilbara stations for the past 18 months.

Cleaners removed the packs as a precaution after being told one woman had gone home sick, he said.

Mr Stanbury said Police took the health concerns seriously and de-humidifiers worth $2 million had been installed at the two Pilbara police complexes.

WA's 'sick' police stations - September 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The WA Police Union says it will demand WorkSafe inspectors examine two Pilbara police stations hit by a plague of mould and bacteria if WA Police refuses to allow an independent air testing audit.

Union president George Tilbury said officers at Karratha and South Hedland police stations had been grappling with "sick building syndrome" for years and the force had done little to address the situation to ensure the health and safety of officers.

At least one Pilbara-based officer has been diagnosed with legionnaires' disease, but several others have reported serious respiratory illnesses believed to be linked to the mould outbreaks, which have occurred since 2011.

Mr Tilbury said the union would commission independent air quality testing so a thorough examination of both Pilbara police stations could be conducted.

"This includes the air-conditioning duct work, to ascertain if mould, bacteria and other allergens are present in sufficient quantities to cause harm or ill health," he said.

"The [union] board also recommended that if WA Police prevent the entry of such an independent body, then I am authorised to exercise any lawful avenue to ensure member safety, including requesting that a WorkSafe inspector attend the premises."

On Wednesday, cleaners saturated the Karratha complex with an over-powering "noxious substance", leaving staff complaining of headaches and feeling unwell, the union said. One woman suffered vomiting and two people took sick leave on Thursday.

BBB provides tips to avoid phone fraud - September 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A recent study showing that 17.6 million Americans lost $8.6 billion to fraud conducted over the telephone in the last year should be a wakeup call to consumers, Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises.

The study, conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of a company called Truecaller, shows the pervasive nature of telephone scams, which can affect both mobile and land-based phones. The pollsters said the average loss reported by victims was $488.80. Actual losses could be larger because some consumers never check their phone bill for fraud or they fail to report the fraud to their phone company or police.

"Internet fraud gets a lot of attention, but old-fashioned phone fraud is still a widespread problem," said Michelle L. Corey, St. Louis BBB president and CEO. "Consumers should check their phone bills regularly for fraud. They should also be alert to fraudsters who use phony excuses to trick them into revealing sensitive information that could lead to identity theft."

Fraud conducted over the telephone varies widely. It includes:

Cramming: Unauthorized charges added to mobile or landline phone bills.

Tech support scams: Unsolicited calls from people who offer to "clean" your computer or remove malware. Often, these scammers ask to take control of your computer remotely, which gives them the opportunity to look for sensitive information, such as passwords and account numbers for bank or credit card accounts.

Hang-up scams: Callers from overseas call victims' cell phones and hang up before they can answer the call. If the victim returns the call, they are put on hold and incur steep charges based on the length of the call.

High-pressure sales: Unsolicited callers selling products ranging from medical alert systems to alarm systems and air-duct cleaning try to get victims to buy on the spot, often by making misleading claims or promises. In some cases, they tell victims that the alarm system is "free" or that it has been paid for by a relative. However, the systems often require customers to sign up for monthly monitoring fees.

Government agency impersonators: Callers may say they're from the IRS or another government agency, and they ask for sensitive information such as Social Security numbers or bank account numbers to "verify" a victim's identity or to get them to pay alleged fines, taxes or other fees. In reality, the callers are thieves, who will use the information to steal money or commit other fraud.

BBB offers the following advice for consumers who want to avoid phone fraud:

    Duct Cleaning|NJ|Essex|Bergen|Morris|Air Group|800-545-1020 - September 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Air Group, serving NJ for over 65 years, provides expert duct cleaning services.

Dirty ducts circulate dirty air! Dirty ducts can also provide a breeding ground for a variety of microbial growth such as mold and bacteria. 50% of all illnesses are either caused or aggravated by polluted indoor air. The possibility of this scenario is increased in homes with pets, smokers and homes that have undergone remodel or home improvement projects.

Even if you have none of these concerns, you may also want to consider duct cleaning when moving into a previously owned home, as the prior home owner may have! Why be left with someone elses dirt?

The EPA claims the air in our homes is up to 70% more polluted than the air outside Lets look at why: Todays modern homes are built tighter for the sake of energy efficiency. Most homeowners choose to forego the cost of proper indoor air quality equipment on their home comfort system; and most rarely (if ever) clean their ductwork, it is no wonder the air in our homes becomes dirty over time.

Interesting fact: Your home comfort system re-circulates the air within your home as many as 50 times a day, each time dragging the air you breathe through your air duct system!

Its easy to see how having your ductwork professionally cleaned will eliminate the built-up dirt in your ventilation system and enhance the overall indoor air quality of your home. Call Air Group for your duct cleaning needs inMorris, Essex, Union, Bergen, Monmouth and Middlesex County and the surrounding NJ areas.

UPDATE: Neighbors Homes Damaged from Water Main Break - September 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

UDPATE 9/5/14 @ 5:00 p.m. BELLE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A few neighbors in Belle were left cleaning up after a water main break poured water into their homes Friday morning.

It's not known just how much water leaked from the water main break in front of 7-Eleven, but West Virginia American Water officials say there was at least four inches of standing water in the parking lot.

The water rushed down an alley and had no where else to go, but into Tony Slack's yard. He says, "We thought it had just really rained hard and then I noticed it was much more than that." He adds, "My house is the low point so all the water went into my property."

Slack says by the time he knew the water main broke, it was almost too late. Electronics stored in his garage were damaged as well as crucial wiring underneath his house. He says he, "went around to the side of my home and noticed everything was submerged in water. The duct work for my air conditioning, my electrical."

He says West Virginia American Water sent crews to clean-up, but it could be a few days before his air conditioning can be turned back on.

This wasn't the first break in the area. "There was another one right there across the street in the banks parking lot and that was two weeks ago," Slack says.

West Virginia American Water officials say the cause is likely due to an old line. The one that ruptured was a ten inch cast iron line.

It took crews the entire afternoon to fix the break. They were forced to dig carefully around gas lines.

During the repair, ten homes were without water, including the Belle Fire Department and 7-Eleven.

Gas station attendants say water did not get into any gas lines and everything was inspected to protocol standards.
