Air Duct Cleaning – COIT | Carpet Cleaning, Upholstery … - December 4, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Air duct cleaning should be conducted every two or three years for a healthier home.

Your home's Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is important, and having a clean, properly functioning heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system is vital to maintaining a clean healthy and comfortable living environment.

In addition, a newly cleaned air duct system runs more efficiently than a dirty one, resulting in lower utility bills and a cleaner, less dusty home.

Our air duct cleaners check for dust, dirt, pollen, animal dander and other airborne contaminants that are pulled into your HVAC system every time the furnace or air conditioner runs. Over time, they build up inside your ductwork, making your air duct system a breeding ground for mold spores, bacteria, fungus, mildew and other microbes, which are then re-circulated through your home, impacting the health and comfort of your family.

Those who suffer from allergies, asthma or other respiratory ailments, especially children and the elderly, are vulnerable to the effects of indoor air pollution.

As a result, most health experts agree on the health benefits of proper, and regular, air duct cleaning.

State Shuts Down Several Air Duct Cleaning Companies For … - November 28, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

DENVER (CBS4) They claim to clean air ducts for a low price but the state has now shut the companies down.

Colorado Attorney General John Suthers is going after the companies that have a lot of potential victims. According to the lawsuit filed by the attorney generals office, the companies not only scammed people out of money, the service could get some customers sick.

Many people who get their air ducts cleaned do so because they have asthma or allergies, and a shoddy cleaning can actually be worse than not getting the ducts cleaned at all.

Customers thought they were getting fresh air when they hired Seabreeze Air, Quality Air and Fresh Air.

Well, it starts out as a classic bait and switch, Suthers said.

Suthers says the companies advertised duct cleaning for $35 and then charged up to $1,000. He says customers werent the only ones they lied to.

They told both the court and ourselves in a previous proceeding that they were going out of business, but in fact they simply changed their name and went back into business, Suthers said.

Unfortunately within our industry its not the exception, its the norm where you have folks that are taking advantage of folks, Ductworks General Manager Eddie Frisk said.

Frisk has been in business 23 years and cleans more than 4,000 homes a year. This year he says the floods have meant more business and more unscrupulous companies than ever.

I get the same coupons that everybody else gets. You cant get your ventilation system cleaned for $35, Frisk said.

    Air Duct Cleaning | DoItYourself.com – DIY Home Improvement … - November 26, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

It's normal for HVAC return registers to get dusty as dust-laden air is pulled through the grate. This does not indicate that your air ducts are contaminated with heavy deposits of dust or debris; the registers can be easily vacuumed or removed and cleaned.

If no one in your household suffers from allergies or unexplained symptoms or illnesses, and if after a visual inspection of the inside of the ducts, you see no indication that your air ducts are contaminated with large deposits of dust or mold (no musty odor or visible mold growth), having your air ducts cleaned is probably unnecessary.

On the other hand, if family members are experiencing unusual or unexplained symptoms or illnesses that you think might be related to your home environment, you should discuss the situation with your doctor.

While the debate about the value of periodic duct cleaning continues, no evidence suggests that such cleaning would be detrimental, provided that it is done properly.

Failing to follow proper duct cleaning procedures can cause indoor air problems. For example, an inadequate vacuum collection system can release more dust, dirt, and other contaminants than if you had left the ducts alone. A careless or inadequately trained service provider can damage the ducts or heating and cooling system, possibly increasing your heating and air conditioning costs, or force you to undertake difficult and costly repairs or replacements.

If there is substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface (e.g., sheet metal) ducts or on other components of your heating and cooling system, your ducts need cleaning. There are several important points to understand concerning mold detection in heating and cooling systems.

Many sections of your heating and cooling system may not be accessible for a visible inspection, so ask the service provider to show you any mold they say exists.

You should be aware that although a substance may look like mold, a positive determination of whether it is mold or not can be made only by an expert and may require laboratory analysis for final confirmation. For about $50, some microbiology laboratories can tell you whether a sample sent to them on a clear strip of sticky household tape is mold or simply a substance that resembles it.

If you have insulated air ducts and the insulation gets wet or moldy it cannot be effectively cleaned and should be removed and replaced.

If the conditions causing the mold growth in the first place are not corrected, mold growth will recur.
