The year began with duct tape.
A man who was so intoxicated on an Iceland Air flight that his fellow passengers were forced to restrain him by duct-taping him to his seat was one of the first major airline stories of 2013. The story, and the photos that accompanied it, were so unbelievable that I hesitated to report it as it began to surface. But it was true.
Let's call duct-taped airline passenger a low point for air travel in 2013. There were others, of course, but there were also some incredible stories of airline service and compassion. Stories so beautiful they brought me to tears.
And then there was the woman escorted off a plane for singing Whitney Houston songs.
Click through the next few pages to see the best and worst of air travel in 2013. And that story that made me cry? It's the last one on the list, and my pick for the very best airline story of 2013.
A cellphone video showed passengers onboard an Iceland Air flight from Reykjavik to New York's John F. Kennedy Airport subduing an unruly passenger by tying him to his seat with duct tape and zip ties after he began screaming and hitting other passengers.
The unidentified passenger allegedly downed an entire bottle of duty-free alcohol, according to a man who posted a photo on his blog, who said the picture was taken by a friend on the flight.
The airline accused the man of accosting and hitting people on the flight. Passengers say he even tried to choke the person next to him and screamed, "The plane is going to crash."
Once in awhile, an airline employee does something that goes above and beyond the call of duty to help a customer. But it's probably safe to assume that none of those employees were the CEO of the airline.
Richard Anderson, Delta's CEO, gave up his seat on an oversold flight, making it possible for Jessie Frank to pick her daughter up from a summer camp for diabetic kids, she said.

Q: Our 7-year-old finished garage, built on a slab, has mold on the ceiling in all three bays. One can see the outline of the ceiling studs. The walls are clear. There is an apartment over the garage. Where should we start, please?
A: Before starting, an explanation, complicated by the apartment above the garage, is this: The garage ceiling is not insulated, and the ceiling joists (not studs) are a bit cooler than the whole ceiling, and water vapor builds up in the garage and condenses on the ceiling under the joists, and mold grows, hence the mold is only on the outline of the joists.
To start, treat the mold stains with a mix of 1 part bleach and 3 parts water. If the ceiling is not insulated, have cellulose blown in. If the garage ceiling is already insulated, then ventilate the garage to release all that water vapor outside.
Q: I recently took three wool shirts out of the closet for winter wear, and found moth holes in two of them. I washed and froze both of them to kill any eggs, and hung a "Safer" trap to catch any live moths. What else can I do? I really don't like the smell of mothballs.
A: Go to a store that sells anti-moth products, and you should be able to buy a non-odor treatment.
Keeping rodents out of car
A caller recently asked if there is a way to keep rodents from chewing electrical wires in his car. The car is parked outdoors, and he has no garage. The Handyman suggested he find a garage he could rent and make rodent proof, or install deterrents in the car.
Here is what Dick Shohet of Carlisle suggested: "We find that fabric softener sheets work wonders to discourage rodent damage in our vehicles. We put a sheet under the hood, in the trunk, and a third somewhere in the cockpit. Shazam! No rodents. And they smell nice."
Thanks, Dick. Your answer went right into my archives.
Q: We have a very long ranch that is over 50 years old. We have forced hot air heat/air conditioning through floor grates and overhead ducts. Every year the furnace is cleaned, I ask about cleaning the ducts. No one ever recommends it. But, I have not understood why. Please let me know the company you would suggest and how often.

JBS Heating and Air Launches a New Website
Most old farm trucks are destined to rust away quietly in a tree line when their working days are done. That seemed to be the fate of Old Red, a 1937 International Harvester that Sue Sallees grandfather had bought new and used for many years.
I dont remember riding in it, but my mom did, Sue Sallee said. The pickup, its fenders battered and its paint gone, had been consigned to a resting place on the farm many years before Warren and Sue Sallee stumbled upon it in 2009, while attending her mothers 80th birthday celebration.
It was known as `Old Red back in the day, Warren said. The old truck had somehow survived a tornado that collapsed a building on it in 1991. When the Sallees mentioned finding it, her mother was surprised it was still there.
Mom had sold it after the tornado. She got $35 for it, but the guy apparently never came and got it, so it sat there for another 18 years, Sue said. Her mother told them if they were interested in it, they could have it. It required cutting down a tree to drag the old hulk out, but they hauled the relic out and stashed it in their oversized workshop where Warren was busy building a customized 1951 Ford.
I knew what I was going to do with it, Warren said. Thats about when rat rods were starting to catch on and I really wanted to build a rat rod.
With two projects staring her in the face, Sue said, I had to slow him down a little bit. She suggested he focus exclusively on one of the projects.
I wanted to see it done before I died, she joked.
When they began cleaning out the interior of the truck about three weeks later, they found they had inherited an unwelcome guest: a skunk had taken up residence inside the cab and was still there.
She screamed and I took off running, Warren recalled.
Eventually, the stinky offender was captured in a live trap and removed from the building with only a slight aroma left as a reminder.
