SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Experts suggest that anyone planning a home remodeling project does plenty of homework. If that's the case, this weekend's Showcase of Remodeled Homes could be considered the study guide.

"We had all this wonderful space downstairs but it was quite outdated. We didn't use it very frequently and it was somewhat cold," Dani Pattison said.

The lower level of the Pattison family home isn't what it used to be and they consider that a very good thing.Last year, they decided to completely remodel it. Now, the basement features a modern fireplace on one end and a well designed wet bar on the other. And everything between was also updated.

The Pattison's chose to update their home and stay. Others do so to add value before selling.

"Everybody wants to put their own touch on their belongings and on their home and make it theirs. That's the great thing about remodeling, is when a homeowner does buy a new home, they can remodel and make it their own," Jason Seykora of Seykora Remodeling said.

Among remodeling projects in KELOLAND homes, kitchens are number one. Remodeling the bathroom is the second most popular. No matter what you remodel though, those who do the work say getting your homework done before hand is the most important step.

The Homebuilders Association is hosting its Showcase of Remodeled Homes this weekend. The event will let anyone researching remodeling trends see the transformation of eleven homes.

"We did do a lot of looking around and focusing on certain things. We found some things that we really liked and tried to pull colors and ideas from there," Pattison said.

"That's the great thing about the Showcase of Remodeled Homes is you can come out, see a bunch of products and it may lean you one way or the other in the end," Seykora said.
