The strength of the housing market in the past year has fuelled demand for architects and designers.

The number of new job ads for those professions jumped 42 per cent in 2014, according to jobs website SEEK, making them the fastest growing positions.

The next strongest rise in job ads was in education and training, and farming, animals and conservation, which recorded growth of 16 per cent.

At the other end of the spectrum, job ads in the mining and energy sectors slumped 36 per cent, as mining investment dropped, while ads for engineers were down 18 per cent.

Earlier this week, ANZ's closely watched job ads survey showed an 11.4 per cent increase in job ads in 2014.

The latest official employment figures showed a surprise drop in the unemployment rate in December, to 6.1 per cent.
