Two longtime Boulder architects have combined their operations.

Stephen Sparn Architects, PC, recently merged with Sopher Architects LLC, creating Sopher Sparn Architects LLC, a 15-employee firm headquartered at 1731 15th St., the entities announced this week.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

"Our practices complement each other," said Stephen Sparn, principal architect. "We're differentiated enough that there's some synergistic effects."

Sopher's experience in the areas of land planning and entitlement paired well with Sparn Architects' expertise in custom home, multifamily and commercial design, Sparn said.

As a result of the merger, which took effect Jan. 1, Sopher moved his three-person operation to Sparn's newly expanded offices at 1731 15 St. in downtown Boulder, where Sopher Sparn Architects occupy 2,000 square feet.

Sopher Architects previously leased a suite at the Colorado Building, 1919 14th St., in downtown Boulder.

For Sopher, the combination was a means of facilitating further expansion for a practice that experienced exponential growth during the past four years.

"I can't imagine that we could have done more, in the scale of office that we had," Sopher said of his firm's potential growth prior to the merger.

The combined firm this year is moving forward on a couple of notable projects in Boulder, including the 10-acre S*PARK mixed-use project near Boulder Junction and a $5 million renovation of the Dairy Center for the Arts in Boulder.
