FOUR projects from across the region have been honoured at the Australian Institute of Architects' 2015 Darling Downs/West Moreton Regional Architecture Awards held in Toowoomba.

James Cubitt Architects took home the top honour of the night, the William Hodgen Award for Building of the Year, for The Armitage Centre in addition to a regional commendation.

In awarding the project, the jury praised the architects for the "inventive tilt-up concrete 'black box' theatre that sensitively embraces the existing adjacent church hall using its brick rear wall as both a container and a historical feature".

For the second year, the jury selected a project by a local architect to be the Regional Project of the Year.

St Joseph's College's new junior science centre and GLA Block by Sims White Architects and Kratzmann Architects won the 2015 award.

In addition to the two special honours, the jury awarded regional commendations with those projects now progressing to the Queensland State Architecture Awards to be announced on June 26 in Brisbane.
