STUNNED Monica and Shaun Mannion have their neighbours to thank after a lucky escape from a fire.

The Kidsgrove couple have been left with an 8,000 repair bill after a tumble dryer caught fire in their outhouse.

It destroyed the appliance and a fridge-freezer and also damaged doors and windows in their home.

But the couple themselves escaped unhurt after neighbours raised the alarm.

It meant firefighters were already on their way by the time the Mannions realised their home was on fire.

The blaze happened at 6.16pm on Monday in the couple's outhouse in Vine Bank Road.

Mrs Mannion was watching television when she heard a crackling sound.

She added: "I could hear noises, not knowing that it was the next-door neighbours shouting for me to get out of the house as they'd already seen the fire.

"My bathroom door was open and I saw white smoke, but at the time I didn't know it was smoke.
