The 11 News I-Team has learned that an appliance repairman who was ordered to give reparations to clients who officials said he took payments from and made false promises to seems to be at it again.

I-Team reporter Mindy Basara looked into allegations against David Mansel, of Pasadena, and his company, Maryland Appliance Repair, more than a year ago.

Mansel was accused of taking large deposits of money from clients, promising to come back and do the work, but consumers said he instead took the money and they never saw him again.

When Bertha Burgess' dishwasher broke just before Thanksgiving, she needed it to be fixed fast, so she grabbed the Yellow Pages and saw a full page ad for Appliance Repair Wizard, a business owned by Maryland Appliance Repair. She said she called the number, and the repairmen came to her Ellicott City home the next day.

"It was two gentlemen. They came in, and I showed them the dishwasher. They took the panel apart, and he told me it would cost $309 to repair," Burgess said.

She said she gave the men a $200 deposit for parts. She said they promised to come back in a few days, but they didn't. Meanwhile, her check cleared.

"Once the check was cashed, I began calling, and no one was answering my calls," Burgess said.

Ruth Williams knows what that's like. She called Maryland Appliance Repair to fix her dryer. She said Mansel, the company's owner, came to her Columbia townhouse and told her he needed a deposit for a new belt and pulley.

"I wrote a check for $100," Williams said.
