Sundays Drag Your Nag event drew six teams and more than 100 spectators to Chautauqua Park.

This was the first year for the race, hosted by the Beatrice Area Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Michaels Appliance Repair. The event required one participant to carry his or her partner through the course. The carried teammate was required to protect a raw egg for the duration of the race.

Lora Young, executive director of the Beatrice Area Chamber of Commerce, said the idea for the Drag Your Nag event was adopted from Europe.

Ive seen these courses done before, she said. Ive done some research. Haul Your Partner is really, really popular in Europe. They have huge, major championships doing this. I just did a lot of Internet research.

Obstacles included a wheelbarrow, tire run, rope course, hula hoop, archery shoot, slalom and mud pit. For all six teams, the mud pit, the courses final obstacle, provided the biggest challenge.

It was challenging because the dirt on the side was really soft, Matthew Arnt said. Matthew and teammate Holly Arnt won this years competition with a time of 1:29. When you stepped into it, you just kind of fell in. Getting off of it into the water was, of course, sloppy and soupy. Getting out of it was tiring. Thats where I actually fell. It doesnt seem too deep, but once you get up carrying extra weight like that, its challenging.

For Holly, the most challenging element of the race was being pushed in a wheelbarrow.

The wheelbarrow was the scariest, because it really didnt feel balanced, she explained. Just holding on was hard; making sure I didnt break the egg.

Young called the inaugural Drag Your Nag event a success.

Im really happy with six teams, she said. The teams had a wonderful time. They all said they wanted to do it again next year, and theyll help recruit more contestants. They had a blast. It was a lot of fun.
