Testing Uncovers Non-Toxic Mold in Two Caldwell Elementary Classrooms

Caldwell The Caldwell Independent School District says the elementary school has a mold and mildew problem, and more than a few parents are upset about it.

Air quality tests have been run, and the district says mold found in two classrooms is non-toxic.

The safety concerns have prompted a meeting between administrators and parents Tuesday night.

Caldwell Superintendent Janet Cummings says the testing was done after teachers became concerned about on-going respiratory issues and students getting red rashes for no apparent reason. Plus there were concerns about an unidentified odor at the elementary school.

The school district says the mold and mildew found in two classrooms originated from moisture, possibly from that found under carpet.

As a precaution though, about 12 classrooms have been moved to other areas of the elementary school, while cleaning and inspections continue.

A contractor was hired to inspect and clean the air duct system, and the district is taking steps to remove some of the mold and mildew.

The district sent out a letter to parents last Friday alerting them of the issue and Superintendent Cummings and other school officials will be at Tuesday night's meeting to provide an update to parents.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the Elementary-Intermediate Cafeteria.
