JULIE IS LIVE IN CAMBRIDGE WHERE WREATHER IS BLAMED THERE. JULIE? EID, CREWS HAVE BEEN AT IT FOR HOURS HERE TRYING TO REPIR AND REPLACE AT WEAR LYNN HERE EVENTUALLY HOPING TO RESTORE WATER TO THE BUILDINGS. EX PERSES SAY THERE ARE A FEW THINGS CAN DO AT HOME TO KEEP THIS FROM HAPPENING TO YOU. FOR THE BETTER PART OF EIGHT HOURS, CREWS WORKED TO REPAIR A WATER VALVE OUTSIDE OF THE AMERICAN RED CROSS IN CAMBRIDGE. POLICE SAY THE BREAK WAS WEATHER RELATED AND WHILE YOU MAY NOT HAVE A GAPING HOLE END YOUR BASEMENT, EXPERTS SAY IF YOU DON'T TAKE THE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS, YOU COULD HAVE A BIG PROBLEM. THIS IS UP THERE. IT IS NOT THE BUSIEST. IT IS THE BUSIEST IN YEARS. McGWIRE PLUMBING IN NEWTON HAS BEEN FIELDING RUP WARDS OF 100 CALLS A WEEKEND BECAUSE OF THE COLD SNAP. NO HEAT, FROZEN PIPES, BROKEN PIPES. NO ONE CAN SET THE THERMOSTAT AT 72. AT THIS TIMER, GOD TO COOP THE HOT WATER CIRCULATING THAT THE POOPS. AS FOR INSULATING THOSE PIPES, THEY SAY THAT DOESN'T EXACTLY PREVENT THE PIPE FROM FREEZING. ALL ENSUE LATION BACK THERE, THAT IS RESISTANCE FACTOR. IT DOESN'T MAKE IT FROST PROOF. THE FIBERGLASS VARIETIES THE ONLY VARIETY McGWIRE RECOMMENDS. THE BEST DEAL IS TO SEAL DRAFTS IN THE HOUSE. THAT IS PROBABLY THE PRIORITY NUMBER ONE. KEEP CABINETS OPEN AND LET FAUCETS DRIP. OIL THE CIRCULATOR TO THE HEATING SYSTEM BUT BEFORE ALL ELSE, KNOW HOW TO SHUT THE WATER OFF. YOU DONE KNOW WHERE THE WATER MET ARE IS BEFORE THE PIPE BREAKS. THESE ARE THE TWO PRODUCTS NOW IN TERMS OF INSULATING. THIS US TO HE VENT CONDENSATION. THIS IS WHAT YOU SHOULD USE IN THE WINTER, BUT KEEP IN MIND, EXPERTS SAY, THIS ONLY SOMEWHAT

Braving bitter temperatures, crews worked for hours to repair a valve under the roadway just outside of the Red Cross in Cambridge overnight.

Watch report

Single-digit temperatures can mean big problems in cities and towns, but they can also cause big issues in your own home.

Experts are urging homeowners to be proactive so as to avoid plumbing problems.

This is up there. Its not the busiest, but its the busiest in years, said Anthony Farese of Maguire Plumbing.

Maguire Plumbing of Newton is fielding dozens of calls each weekend because of the cold snap. Problems include no heat, frozen pipes and broken pipes.

Nobody keeps their thermostat at 72 but this time of year its good to keep that hot water circulating through your pipes, said Farese.

Plumbers say insulating your pipes may not be the best solution.

All insulation has an R factor, it has a resistance factor. It doesnt make it frost proof, said Farese.
