FRANKLIN The Cool Springs YMCA will be closed beginning Monday after mold was found in the mens locker room.

Tonya Kimbrough, director of internal communications, said codes require functioning restroom facilities in order to be open to the public, but that will not be possible during the work.

She said the mold was discovered during a renovation of the mens shower area, and the owner of the property, Duke Realty, wanted to make sure there is no mold in other areas of the building.

The facility will be closed for at least 90 days, but it could be closed longer if more mold is found in other areas of the building.

The Cool Springs YMCA is a 24,000-square-foot facility that typically has 350 to 400 members in it per day. Those members are being asked to use other area facilities including Franklin, Brentwood and Maryland Farms.

Kimbrough said the YMCA is trying to place as many (employees) as possible in other facilities.

Mold in buildings can cause damage to the structure as well as affect air quality and human health.

Victor Griffith, president of Breathe Easy Mold Remediation Inc., said he uses a multistage process to check for mold in buildings. This includes using a thermal image infrared camera to search for areas with water inside the walls.

(This) gives you a clue as to where mold could be growing, because it needs water to survive, Griffith said.

He would then inspect areas where moisture is present, followed by a visual inspection with fiber optics or, if the customer requests, removing a section of the wall for a visual inspection.
