EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Major demolition inside the old McCurdy Hotel in Downtown Evansville should begin in just a few months.

The Kunkel Group plans to convert the almost 100-year-old building into high-end apartments.

It's pretty run down right now with some windows boarded up, but a little over a year from now, the old McCurdy Hotel along Riverside Drive should be restored to its former glory.

The Kunkel Group hopes to start demolition work in September or October, once all of their financing is in place.

They plan to turn the building into 96 luxury apartments, mostly one and two bedrooms, with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances.

The Kunkel Group says they plan to add a restaurant that will be open to the public and they'll turn part of the first floor into space that can be used for banquets and weddings.

The building has been empty for several years, and once you go inside, you can tell it's seen better days.

There are still beautiful design features, detailed plasterwork and a grand lobby with 25 foot ceilings.

Adam Kunkel, the Kunkel Group's Vice President, says they want to preserve as much of the historical elements of the old hotel as they can.
