LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A Kentucky and Louisville landmark is in such a state that officials have ruled the public can no longer sit in the stands.

An inspection was recently completed on Cardinal Stadium at the Kentucky Exposition Center and what they found is not good for the future of the venue, including this summer's Kentucky State Fair free concert series.

Rip Rippetoe, the Fair Board President and CEO, said they're moving all concert goers to the field to watch this year's acts and placing the stage along the first base line of the baseball field.

The free concert series for this year's state fair includes:

Rippetoe ordered an inspection of the nearly 57 year old structure. A report was released this week that showed several serious issues with Cardinal Stadium from water damage that has caused rusting and bricks to fall out. They found areas where there is no support for seating and mold in other parts of the stadium.

Demolition of the once popular concert and sports venue has been on the long-term plan list for the State Fair Board. Rippetoe said Friday this recent inspection means that demolition could happen sooner than later.

"In many ways, it's sad that it had deteriorated and we're having to have this conversation," said Rippetoe. "It represents so many great things about this community and the Commonwealth. From concerts like Farm Aid, and you look at the Stones who came to town. You had a few minor league teams, the Colonels played there. UofL's played there. (Saint) Xavier and all those high school teams that have come and gone and all the concerts we've done at the State Fair. It's a little sad we have to have this discussion."

The stadium was also used for some offices. All those are currently being relocated.

The inspection report has been handed over the state Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction. Rippetoe said it will be up to them to recommend what to do next and when to do it.
