A plumber has been ambushed and bashed and his vehicle set on fire, forcing residents to be evacuated from a street in Sydney's west.

I heard a slight explosion and when I came out I saw some smoke and flames

A police source has told Fairfax Media the man had gone to a job at a house in Mariana Crescent, Lethbridge Park, about 8am on Friday but the residence was empty.

''It looks like he's been set up as there was no one home at the address he was called to,'' the source said.

After he went into the backyard, the plumber was attacked by two men who punched and kicked him in the face numerous times, police said.

They then started a fire which engulfed the plumber's Toyota Hilux.

Police, firefighters and paramedics found the vehicle contained tanks of acetylene.

A 200-metre exclusion zone was established and police evacuated up to 50 people from their homes. But after lunch, residents were allowed to return to the street.

''He has provided police with a statement but has been unable to describe his attackers," the police source said. "At this stage an investigation is under way and we can't say what the motive was.''
