Demolition crews have started work on taking down the former Alberta Cycle building on Alberta Avenue to make room for a new arts facility on the site.

We have a community ... just itching to see the development of it. And see who's going to come in there and what groups are going to inhabit the space, said Christy Morin, executive director of Arts on the Ave.

The one-storey building, nearly a block long, is owned by the city.

There were hopes that it could have been upgraded and used as a building for the arts, but Morin says structural problems made renovating it impossible.

We found that it just wasn't sound and so it going down is really a great pillar realizing that we are going to be able to rebuild this neighbourhood, she said.

We are going to be able to rebuild this centre hub of the neighbourhood and see something fantastic come up.

She says the site will be used as a green space for the neighbourhood until the city develops a plan for the new building.
