A GOLD Coast family is set to reclaim a parcel of land 75 years after it was abandoned and 75 years of outstanding rates are likely to be waived.

The McClymont family will again own a remote Currumbin Valley 0.74ha block after the Gold Coast City Council recognised them as descendants of its rightful owner, George Bertram McClymont, who died in 1940.

The Gold Coast Bulletin revealed last September that the council had moved to acquire 1799 Currumbin Creek Rd and declare it parkland.

Following the Bulletins story, some of Mr McClymonts surviving nine grandchildren came forward and expressed an interest in regaining ownership of the block.

Last week the council terminated its plan to resume the land, clearing the way for the ownership to be recognised by the courts.

City finance boss William Owen-Jones said it was unlikely the McClymont family would have to pay the 75 years of outstanding rates.

There was an objection by the McClymont family, which is great, and in order to make their claim valid they need to do some estate work with the Supreme Court and make a declaration, he said.
