Demolition company ordered to pay fines following Crosstown death

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Chandler Demolition is based out of Memphis and is one of the construction groups working on the Crosstown Building.

However, in 2014 a 21-year-old fell more than 40 feet to his death through a hole on the 10th floor, all the way to the sixth. It was a hole that the state says should have been covered up.

"I should be planning his wedding, his something else besides his funeral today," said Chris Holliday.

WMC Action News 5 introduced viewers to Holliday in October 2014 after his son Zach died fell to his death. The two worked together.

"Me and my boss Travis started at the bottom and we sort of met in the middle, but Travis heard his phone ringing first," said Holliday.

According to a state report, Zach wasn't specifically trained to recognize certain job hazards. It also states the exposed hole he fell through was in a fenced in area, but wasn't covered like it was supposed to be - something his father admitted workers knew about last year.

"Me along with a lot of other people didn't cover this hole up," said Holliday.

Chris says he was recently fired by the demolition company after 20 years and couldn't talk on the advice of his lawyer.

"He was telling me what to do sometimes you know, it was great. I was proud of him, I was really proud of him," said Chris Holliday in a 2014 interview.
