An overseas businessman visiting Hamilton has died in an accidental fall.

Police say the 32-year-old man was found unconscious with head injuries about 1am on Friday in Hilllsborough Terrace, Hamilton, after falling down a steep bank and over a five-metre retaining wall onto the roadway.

The death was initially treated as suspicious but police said after they had examined the scene that the death was an accident.

The coroner will be advised of the death and the man's name will be released when next-of-kin are informed.

The man was an overseas visitor and was in New Zealand on business but police did not say where he was from.

A St John ambulance crew attended but were unable to save the man who died at the scene.

Hillsborough Terrace is part of a walkway on the Waikato River and is near the city centre.
