Kitchens are always a popular topic in our weekly Home Front chats. So its no surprise the subject was on everyones minds recently when we were joined by Bruce Case of Case Design/Remodeling. The home renovation expert had a lot to say about creating a beautiful, comfortable, timeless kitchen.

1. Flooring

Wood is the most popular flooring choice, Case says. To make the space feel larger and more cohesive, try to use the same material throughout the space (including adjoining halls and rooms). He also sees a lot of tile and cork, and a growing number of people interested in porcelain planks designed to look like wood. Theyre a good choice for any room in your house, however, you may want to consider installing a heated floor to add comfort.

2. Cabinets

Painted cabinets are timeless, as is a gray/white color palette, Case says. Gray or white cabinets are easy to pair with wood floors, but theyre not the only option. Wood floors with stained cabinets is a great combination. You want to be selecting the species and stain of each, so that they complement one another. For example, light floors and dark cabinets is a safe way to go and creates contrast, Case says.

3. Hardware and finishes

While its safer to stay neutral in the major categories flooring, cabinets, counters easily changeable items such as plumbing fixtures and hardware offer a chance to get creative and show your personality.

4. Tile

Traditional doesnt have to mean boring. For a modern take on a timeless trend, Case says, think about installing traditional material in a nontraditional way. For example, buy a classic Carrara marble tile but lay it in a chevron pattern for a backsplash.
