Austin Joyner sheds light on Petersen's recruiting philosophy

I had the chance to sit down with Marysville-Pilchuck senior Austin Joyner this week for a story that will run Sunday. Joyner, a top defensive back prospect that chose Washington over Boise State and Washington State, had some interesting things to say about Huskies coach Chris Petersen, particularly his recruiting philosophies.

Quick background on Joyner: He originally committed to Washington as a sophomore running back, but decided he wanted to play defensive back at the next level. By that time, former coach Steve Sarkisian left for USC and the new staff, led by Petersen, didnt want to offer him at that position immediately without seeing him play. Joyner then committed to Washington State, but then reneged on that after defensive coordinator Mike Breske was fired. He took official visits to Boise State and Washington before committing to the Huskies this winter.

Thats one of the positions you cant really mess up on, you cant afford to have bad corners who are not going to do good, Joyner said.Everybody passes. [Petersen] said defensive backs and quarterbacks are the two positions that he needs to see really showcase their skill before he can offer.

The popular term OKG or Our Kinda Guys,that Petersen has made into a certain Washington motto, well Joyner likes it, and takes pride in being one.

Anotherperson Joyner talked highly of was defensive backs coach Jimmy Lakes.

I really feel like he could develop me, because he has a really good track record and when I was up there, he showed me a little bit of what he does, Joyner said. Completely agree with it.
