New York's One World Trade Center.

In recent years, several of the world's most astute architectural thinkers - including the legendary Moshe Safdie - joinedthe international chorus condemning the role of the skyscraper (or "object building", as Safdie so shrewdly put it) in urban and civic space. Despite their concerns, 2014 stands as the world's tallest year yet.

According to a report released by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), a record 97 buildings standing at 200 metres or higher joined city skylines worldwide in the past 12 months alone, with two of those in Australia (including Melbourne's Prima Pearl Tower) and 74 in Asia (58 of those in China).

The One World Trade Centre in New York City was the tallest building, completed at 541 metres.

To top it off, the CTBUH predicts 2015 to be taller again. May it throw shadows and channel wind tunnels among us all.
