Boarded up buildings near Hillsborough Hospital in Charlottetown will be demolished as quickly as possible, says Pam Trainor of Health P.E.I.

Demolition work on four derelict buildings near the Hillsborough Hospital in Charlottetown will likely continue until next month with two of the structures already torn down.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal said the buildings known as the greenhouse and the old food bank have been demolished.

That leaves two others, which she said will likely be torn down by the end of February.

The demolition comes after attention was drawn to the buildings when it was revealed they housed old health and financial records.

Charlottetown police confirmed the buildings had been broken into several times.

Special care had to be taken with the demolition because the buildings contained asbestos, lead paint, mould and other hazardous materials.
