Work is continuing on complex property demolitions in the Port Hills area of Christchurch.

Main Road in Sumner will be closed intermittently at night from tonight until January 9 to allow for the demolition of critical parts of properties on Clifton Terrace, known as the "Clifton Cluster".

The properties were significantly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake and were red-zoned.

CERA Port Hills manager Brendan Winder says number 40 will be the first house to go tonight followed by number 42.

The road closure covers the full length of the protective container wall and will ensure that "the minor possibility that demolition material could land on Main Road does not impact on public safety", Mr Winder said.

Main Road will be closed for 25 minutes every half hour from 9pm - 4am.
