A Danvers developer proposes a 230-room extended-stay hotel by restoring and expanding a vacant complex at the Charlestown Navy Yard.

Kavanagh Advisory Group wants to convert the century-old Chain Forge building 105 into a five-story, 180,000-square-foot limited-service hotel including conference rooms, a restaurant and fitness center. The company also has a 54-unit condo development under construction on an adjacent property.

The 1.5-acre site hotel site owned by the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) is bounded by Ninth and 13th Streets, the Second Avenue pedestrian walkway and First Avenue. The bulk of the hotel space would be located in a former smithery building, and the facade of the existing structures would be retained. The building has been vacant since 1974, when the Boston Naval Shipyard closed.

Kavanagh proposes adding a 63,000-square-foot one-level addition adjacent to Second Avenue, which it said is necessary to cover the costs of restoration and environmental remediation.

No on-site parking is planned. The developers said they will sponsor a valet service and that the Boston Autoport in Charlestown has agreed to reserve 200 spaces for the hotel.

The development also would include a historical exhibit containing 38 pieces of machinery owned by the National Park Service.

The project is subject to approval by the BRA, National Park Service and Boston Landmarks Commission.
