A retaining wall collapsed early Wednesday morning at Asheville Regional Airport. Engineers on site determined heavy rain from the previous night's deluge brought down the west wall on Ferncliff Park Drive, said airport spokeswoman Tina Kinsey.

Part of the north wall and the south wall also have been damaged, Kinsey said. However, no erosion has occurred, and the road itself remains useable.

Airport management, contractors and engineers were already working on the issue by the daybreak Wednesday. They were meeting on Christmas Eve to discuss what the long-term remedy will be to fix the damaged area.

The west wall has been under construction the last few months and is part of the airport's development area. Its collapse will not affect air travel, Kinsey said.
