An alleged rogue trader appeared in court accused of conning customers out of thousands of pounds for jobs around their homes that were never carried out.

Andy Evans was in the dock at Wirral magistrates court today, where he faced a string of fraud charges in a prosecution brought by Wirral council.

The 48-year-old, of Grainger Avenue, West Kirby, is accused of giving quotes for works such as fitting windows and doors taking cash for the jobs, but then failing to do them or return the money.

In total he is charged with fraudulently taking 5,245 from five alleged victims across West Wirral and North Wales last year.

Alongside eight counts of fraud by false representation, he is also charged with seven counts of dishonestly failing to disclose a notice of cancellation rights. Evans had already pleaded not guilty to six of the charges, relating to works at three addresses he allegedly took cash for and failed to carry out between April and July last year.

They included 650 to supply and fit doors and windows at an address on Irbyside Road, Greasby, a deposit of 320 to buy patio doors and frosted windows for a job on Queens Avenue, Meols, and a deposit of 850 to supply and fit windows and doors on Broadway, Greasby.

Today he pleaded not guilty to a further nine charges.

Six involve an alleged victim on Mill Road, Thingwall, who Evans is accused of taking 1,850 from for three jobs that were never carried out fitting a new door, painting damp course and roof coating.

The others relate to an address on Maplewood Avenue, Deeside in North Wales, where Evans is charged with taking 1,325 to buy a canopy and 250 for guttering which was never fitted.

The case was adjourned until December 17 when a trial date will be set. Evans was bailed on the condition he has no contact with several named witnesses.
