By Staci Giordullo (Angie's List) - Keeping your furnace firing on all cylinders doesnt require a lot of a homeowners time and attention. However, regularly changing the filter admittedly, not the sexiest household chore, is one maintenance step thats necessary to keep the HVAC unit running at its best.

Selecting the best filter can save you money and improve air quality by preventing unwanted particles from circulating back into your indoor environment.

Filter efficiency is measured by a minimum efficiency reporting value, or MERV, which determines how effectively it traps dust and contaminants, including viruses. The higher the MERV, the more effective the filter. The scale goes as high as 20, but ratings for residential use typically range from one to 12.

While filters are available in all sizes and budgets, below is a list of the most common options and what to consider when picking the right fit for your home:

Disposable fiberglass

When you think of furnace filter, this type most likely comes to mind. Made from 1-inch thick spun fiberglass, it filters out enough of the large particles to protect the furnace while providing maximum airflow. Cost: $1-$2, MERV: 2-3

Pros: Very inexpensive and should work just fine for those without allergies or asthma.

Cons: No real effect on cleaning the air.
