South Sydney's premiership window is fast closing because they will find it hard to fend off a salary cap squeeze, says former Roosters coach Brad Fittler.

But that's a testament to coach Michael Maguire's ability to turn talented youngsters with potential into bona fide NRL players.

The Rabbitohs will lose Sam Burgess and Ben Te'o to European rugby when their finals campaign ends, with Manly veteran Glenn Stewart signed as a replacement.

Meanwhile, the likes of George Burgess (22), Dylan Walker (20 on Saturday), Luke Keary (22), Adam Reynolds (24), Kyle Turner (22), Kirisome Auva'a (22) and Alex Johnston (19) could all command larger pay packets on the open market.

Their earning ability would only increase should they help the Rabbitohs reach the 2014 grand final, a premiership decider which could be their last for a while if they fail to re-sign all their young stars over the next couple of years.

"Yeah, it's nearly shut. They're getting Glenn Stewart, who's a different kind of player, so Madge (Maguire) will have to dig deep into his coaching bag and find something else because you want to utilise Glenn Stewart," Fittler said.

"The kid are coming through. Salary cap's going to start taking hold of these young players.

"You've got all these edge players who are going to start demanding more money so yes, their window is closing."
