PASCO, WA- Pasco residents are tired of cleaning out their sprinkler filters and said it is causing their grass to die.

One Pasco resident said his sprinkler system and some of his neighbors' systems keep getting clogged up and it all starts at the river.

It plugs up your system when you're gone. If you're gone on vacation then your sprinkler system doesn't work, and your lawn dries up, said the Pasco resident who is identified as Dennis.

He said he usually spends about an hour a day cleaning out the filter in order for his grass to get watered.

You'd think they'd be able to keep the water weeds and the milfoil out of their pumps because once it's in there, it contaminates the whole system, and it continues to come through, said Dennis.

The Franklin County Irrigation District said there is nothing more they can do. John Burns said the water level and the heat are the cause of the problem.

When the water shallows up, the water heat temperature rises a little faster, therefore the stuff grows a little faster and it casts off and just causes the problems, said Burns.

The irrigation system pulls water from the river, sends it through a pipe, and pushes it out to the city. Burns said they clean the pumps every day for nearly four hours but that it is still not enough.

It's hard for us to keep up with it, said Burns.

The Franklin County Irrigation District has had problems with milfoil buildup for the past three years. They have even tried flushing out the system, but it still builds up in the lines. It is something the residents will just have to deal with.
