Whether you are thinking of selling your home or just want an updated look, deciding to make some changes to your interior design can be both challenging and exciting.

While the staging process and designing can be intimidating, it doesn't have to be. The process can be invigorating and can make your home feel refreshed.

If you are ready to put your home on the real estate market, consider depersonalizing your living space. Potential buyers need to have the ability to envision their own photographs, sentimental pieces and artwork in the home.

For example, this means removing a photograph of Grandma and Grandpa from the living room wall and taking your child's artwork off the refrigerator. While this may be difficult for some homeowners, remember that your personal items can easily be stored and ready-to-go when you find your new home.

De-cluttering also is a wonderful way to re-emphasize the design and beauty of your home.

Because homeowners can have difficulty recognizing when their items become too much, it can be beneficial to enlist the assistance of a professional interior designer or a trusted friend for their opinion.

A home is very personal, and these individuals can be more objective when deciding on colors, furniture pieces and decor.

Next, consider your furniture when redesigning your home. Over the years, furniture has become larger, while most room sizes have not increased proportionately. Storing some of your furniture pieces or scaling back on the amount of furniture can greatly change the view of your rooms.

Do you really need a five-piece bedroom set if you already have a walk-in closet? Are most of the drawers sitting empty? If so, think about removing some of the excess furniture that is not being utilized.

Be sure to concentrate on the unique features of your home. If you have fantastic architecture or a beautiful fireplace, concentrate on those aspects of the rooms. The placement of furniture should accent these attributes, not cover them.
