Work has begun at the former gasworks site in Drove Road, with contractors slowly dismantling the mammoth green structures, which ceased production in 1968.

A Wales and West Utilities spokesman confirmed to the Mercury work would take about six months.

Rumours have been circulating all week about what the area would be used for once DSM Demolition has finished removing the gas holders.

New homes, a park, or even a large stadium have all been mooted while there were some tongue-in-cheek calls for an extra car park.

However the utilities firm confirmed there are no plans to redevelop the site.

Its spokesman said: Preparatory work to remove water from the tanks took place between January and April, then demolition work started this month.
