Demolition nears for Georgetown Commons, residents still frustrated

WASHINGTON, Ill. -- Demolition could begin soon on the Georgetown Common Apartments in Washington.

Residents fear that means goodbye to all of their belongings.

It's been six months since the tornado destroyed the complex.

Residents have been restricted from accessing the site for safety reasons.

Management released a statement Tuesday, which said serious threats still remain, access is not allowed, and demolition will start soon.

"A lot of people still had stuff that could have made it in these apartments," said former Georgetown resident, Bobbie Colgan. "Where is it all going? Are they just going to demolish it with it, or are people taking it out? They definitely didn't give anyone who had an opportunity enough time to get what they needed out."

A specific demolition date was not provided.

Management said rebuilding the apartments is undecided.
