IQ Roofing Solutions was fined 5,000 after a member of public alerted Health and Safety officials

A roofing firm has been fined thousands after a worker was pictured jet washing tiles without any safety measures in place.

The Health and Safety Executive was alerted by a shocked member of the public who spotted the scene in Tyldesley, Wigan.

An officer visited the same day found the man jet washing moss and debris on the the steeply-sloping roof without any scaffolding below, the Manchester Evening news reports.

IQ Roofing Solutions was banned from carrying out further work at the site until safety measures had been put in place.

The firms managing director Stuart Bell had visited the site on the morning the picture was taken and knew there was no scaffolding, a court heard.

The company also failed to provide proof of Employers Liability Insurance a requirement under UK law which allows workers to claim compensation if they suffer a workplace injury.

The company had previously been served with a Prohibition Notice in 2011 relating to unsafe roof work, the court was told.

IQ Roofing Solutions pleaded guilty to two breaches of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and one breach of the Employers Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969.

The company, of Nelson Street in Tyldesley, was fined 3,000 and ordered to pay 2,000 prosecution costs.
